Comment: In accordance with Wikipedia's Conflict of interest policy, I disclose that I have a conflict of interest as I am submitting a draft article about myself, Jason W. Wilson.
Jason W. Wilson (physician-anthropologist)
[edit]Jason W. Wilson is an American emergency physician, medical anthropologist, and academic administrator. He serves as the founding chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of South Florida (USF) Morsani College of Medicine and Chief of Emergency Medicine at Tampa General Hospital (TGH), where he is known for his interdisciplinary research at the intersection of clinical care, medical anthropology, addiction medicine, and public health policy.[1][2]
Early life and education
[edit]Wilson earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in anthropology from the University of South Florida (USF) in 2000 and a Master of Arts in anthropology from the University of Michigan in 2004.[2] He completed his Doctor of Medicine (MD) at USF in 2008 and later received a Ph.D. in anthropology from USF in 2023, where his dissertation focused on integrating applied anthropology into clinical practice to address syndemic interactions and structural vulnerability in healthcare.[3]
Academic and clinical career
[edit]Following emergency medicine residency training at Tampa General Hospital, Wilson joined the USF faculty and has since held multiple academic leadership roles.[2] In 2024, he was appointed founding chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine at USF’s Morsani College of Medicine.[1] He concurrently serves as Chief of Emergency Medicine at Tampa General Hospital.[1][2] Wilson is board-certified in both emergency medicine and addiction medicine.[2]
Radical Clinical Anthropology
[edit]Wilson’s primary academic contribution is the development of Radical Clinical Anthropology (also described as Critical, Clinically Applied Anthropology), an approach that applies medical anthropological frameworks directly inside clinical systems to redesign care pathways and address structural determinants of health.[4][3]
Drawing on syndemics, structural vulnerability, and assemblage theory, Wilson advocates embedding anthropologists into clinical teams to co-create new care assemblages for marginalized patients.[4][3] In Clinical Anthropology 2.0, co-authored with Roberta D. Baer, Wilson outlines models for incorporating anthropology into medical education and clinical operations to improve patient-centered care and healthcare equity.[5]
Clinical initiatives
[edit]Wilson has led multiple clinical innovations at Tampa General Hospital applying his theoretical framework:
- Emergency department-based hepatitis C (HCV) screening and linkage program.[6]
- Emergency department-based buprenorphine initiation for opioid use disorder (OUD).[6]
- Take-home naloxone distribution program to reverse opioid overdoses.[6]
- Co-founder of IDEA Exchange Tampa, a mobile syringe services program.[7]
- Specialized clinical pathways for sickle cell disease (SCD).[2]
Public engagement
[edit]Wilson has frequently appeared in major news coverage during the COVID-19 pandemic, opioid epidemic, and public health emergencies:
- Profiled in the Tampa Bay Times for public guidance on COVID hospitalizations.[8]
- Featured expert in WUSF Public Media (NPR) discussing opioid crisis trends.[9]
- Nationally quoted in Associated Press, CNN, MSNBC, BBC, and Bloomberg during major COVID surges.[10][11][12][13][14]
- Participated as an invited expert on federal advisory panels including CDC/HRSA, AHRQ Emergency Boarding Summit, and NIH ACTIV-6 trials.[15][16][17]
- Public educator via YouTube channel TampaERdoc and media interviews.[18]
