Dr Sanduk Ruit

Sanduk Ruit (Nepali: सन्दुक रूइत pronounced [ˈsʌnduk rui̯t], born September 4, 1954) is an ophthalmologist from Nepal who has restored eyesight of over 180,000 people using small incision cataract surgery. Ruit is known as “God of sight” and founder of Tilganga Institute of Ophthalmology.

Early Life And Education

Dr Samduk Ruit was born in Olangchungola, a remote village in Eastern Nepal to father Sonam Ruit and Mother Kesang Ruit. As a child, Ruit witnessed the death of his brother from dysentery and his sister from a Fever. He was inspired to become a doctor after losing his sister Yaangla to Tuberculosis.

Ruit started school at St Robert’s School in Darjeeling. Due to the India-China war, he later enrolled at Siddhartha Banasthali school in Kathmandu, Nepal. In 1970, after completing his schooling, he joined Trichandra College for his High School Science studies.  He received a scholarship to study MBBS at King George medical university in Lucknow India.  He did MD in Ophthalmology from all India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in the year 1984.  

After completion of MD, he worked as general physician in Bir Hospital for three years and then eight years at Nepal eye hospital, Tripureshwor. Later, in 1887, he went to Australia, where he and Fred Hollows developed Small Incision Cataract Surgery (SICS) using intraocular lenses. Ruit became the first Nepali doctor to use intraocular lenses. To raise funds for making eye surgeries more affordable and accessible in Nepal, he established Nepal Eye Program Australia, later renamed The Fred Hollows Foundation.

His leadership qualifications encompass the use of intraocular lenses in cataract surgery. He is a masterful surgeon; he can perform dozens of flawless cataract operations at eye camps over a 12-hour day period. He is known as a doctor who saved 100000 eyes. Through the strong work of resilience, collaboration and a humanitarian focus Dr. Ruit has provided life-changing care to millions of individuals around the world. His leadership has earned him global recognition for his public health and humanitarian work.

Leadership Style

Dr. Shanduk Ruit follows a servant leadership style, focusing on making cataract surgery affordable and accessible. Dr. Ruit developed a new technique known as small-incision cataract surgery (SICS) a suture-free, low-cost technique that can be performed in minutes.  He also pioneered intraocular lenses (IOLs) reducing surgery cost and making treatment accessible to millions.

This breakthrough allowed cataract surgery to be performed in remote areas where traditional surgeries were impossible due to a lack of infrastructure later expanded to other countries including China, India, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Vietnam, and North Korea. His team also trains eye surgeons and healthcare personnel from various countries in this cost-effective and portable technique, resulting in over 35 million operations worldwide.

Dr. Sanduk Ruit has extended his service to most of the developing countries in the world. He is the promoter of the world-renowned simple and low-cost cataract treatment ‘Retinectomy’. In North Korea the documentary aired on his work which featured his treatments in the villages of Nepal and others Asian countries. People’s mindset has changed by his work. World Famous Professor Ellen Robin considers Dr. Ruit as another Steve Jobs who refuses to accept the status quo. Gary Bryan, an Australian ophthalmologist, thinks that Ruit restores the eyesight by performing cataract surgery and implanting a lens inside the eye as simple as Henry Ford developed a car in the United States.

By developing affordable cataract surgery methods and training local doctors, he’s made life-changing medical care available to those in need. His efforts empower communities, promote healthcare equity, and restore sight, giving people the independence and hope they deserve. Ruit’s compassion, creativity and determination show that lasting change is possible, no matter one’s background or wealth. His works continue to improve the lives of people in Nepal and around the world through nonprofitable organization.

How do honesty, principles and ethics play into their leadership strategy?

Dr. Sanduk Ruit is a leader who believes in honesty, strong values and doing what's right. He has devoted his life to helping people regain their eyesight, no matter how much money they have. By creating affordable, high quality cataract surgery and lenses, he made it possible for even the poorest communities to get the care they need. He did not stop at providing treatment- he also looked to the future by setting up the Tilganga Institute of Ophthalmology. This center not only helps people with eye care but also trains local doctors and nurses so they can continue the work in their own communities. His mission is about creating real, lasting change, and giving people hope.

Do they have the qualities which we brainstormed that make a good leader?

Dr. Sanduk Ruit embodies many qualities that make a great leader. Ruit had a bold vision to make cataract surgeries affordable for the poor. He has made a significant difference to countless people through his innovative methods. He is deeply driven by compassion. Ruit has dedicated his life to restoring sight, often working under challenging conditions to help those in need. Ruit has overcome and was exposed to personal and professional challenges while growing up in a remote village in Nepal to achieve his or her goals.

What could they change that would make them even better?

The efforts of Dr. Sanduk Ruit in changing the scope of eye care is commendable, but there is always room for improvement. If he joins the World Health Organization and the United Nations, they may be able to influence policies at a higher level to subsidize eye care services. Working with governments on public health programs geared towards achievable goals of blinding will also increase his outreach.

This will guarantee the sustainability of his mission by training leaders tomorrow and developing the public relations aspect of his initiative. They need to be active at international conferences, seek media attention, and engage in narrative building which would increase support towards his cause.

Furthermore, his methodologies can be taken on by utilizing technology like tele-medicine and AI powered diagnosis machines which makes procedures more cost effective and enables them to be performed in places where medical services are limited. Tackling the root issues such as lack of nutrition and availability of healthcare services by collaborating with the right companies is sure to yield sustainable results. If these measures are taken, there is no doubt that Dr. Ruit’s vision will continue to change the world of eye health for the better.
