Rodriguez was born and raised in Harlem, New York. He attended Forest Trail Academy in Kernersville, North Carolina during the 2016–2017 season, where he developed his basketball skills as a dynamic guard.

He later played NCAA Division I basketball for the University of Denver from 2017 to 2019, appearing in 51 games. Over these seasons, he averaged 4.3 points and 1.2 rebounds per game in 2017–2018, and 3.7 points and 1.3 rebounds per game in 2018–2019.
