Scottish Footy
[edit]Scottish Footy established in 2023, is a new and innovative invasion sport based on its cousins rugby league, touch rugby, and Australian rules football.
Scottish Footy also known as Open-Side Scottish Footy, is a 6 aside game played by 2 teams of a total of 8 players. Lasting only 20 minutes made up of 2 x 10 minute halves, it acts as a faster paced version of its older cousins. Played on a 60m (66 yd) long and 40m (44 yd) wide outdoor pitch. It is played as a non-contact sport similar to touch rugby, allowing a wider range of ages to compete.
It was established by the Scottish Footy Union (SFU) in May of 2023 and designed to focus on the skill and technique associated with rugby league without the contact element. It also incorporates goal kicking, inspired by Australian rules football, to vary scoring opportunities.
In Scottish Footy, points are scored in two ways. One of those ways is by carrying the oval ball and touching it to the ground in the opposing team's goal zone; this is called a touch down, and is the highest scoring method, worth 4 points. The other way of scoring is by kicking the oval ball before the opposing team's edge line and it touching the ground in the opposing team's goal zone; this is called a goal, and is the easiest way of scoring points, worth 1 or 2 points. The number of points awarded is determined by the nature by which the ball touches the ground in the opposing team's goal zone. For example; if the ball touches the ground prior to touching the ground in the opposing team's goal zone, only 1 point is awarded. Whereas if the ball does not interact with another player or part of the field prior to touching the ground in the goal zone, 2 points are awarded. These 2 types of goals are referred to as 1 and 2 point goals respectively.
Competitions
[edit]Except the initial SFU Exhibition Game, played by FNRFC and The Katari Bruadar, there has been no other Scottish Footy competitions globally.
Aided by the Joseph Goal Foundation, the SFU has prospects to launching a competitive Scottish Footy league in the near future. Initially with plans to establish a league in early 2024, but was unable to continue due to a lack of financial backing.
The SFU still share optimism for the expansion of the game due to its fast paced and high scoring nature. The SFU have shared that any who have an interest in participating or beginning their own Scottish Footy competition are welcome to contact the SFU using an official contact for information regarding rules and officially sanctioning the competition.

Positions
[edit]Players on the pitch are divided into forwards and backs. Although the rules of the game apply to all players in the same way, each position has a designated number to identify themselves from other players. These numbers identify what position a person is playing.
Substitutes (often shortened to "subs") are an integral part of the sport. Each team consists of 2 substitutes, typically a forward substitute and a back substitute, although there are no limitations on which players must occupy these slots. These are typically used when a player is tired, although they can be used tactically.
Replacements (also referred to as "interchanges") are additional substitutes that can only replace players in the case of an injury that prevents them from continuing. These are used to permanently replace an injured player during a day of competition (once a player is ruled as unfit to continue, they are not allowed to compete for the remainder of the day, and their replacement is to take their position in the team until the day is over).
Forwards
[edit]The forwards make up the left side of the field and comprise of 3 distinct positions; boundary, edge, and centre. Their main role is to prevent the opposition from scoring.
- The title of boundary forward (numbered 1) comes from their placement on the forward side (left side) of the pitch and their position close to the boundary side line. Therefore, boundary forward's are usually specialised at defending against the boundary side line and are typically trained to cover larger amounts of space. Their position at the side of the pitch also allows them to chase kicks easier as they do not have to run passed as many opposing players. This makes the specialised position good at chasing after kicks to the left side of the field. Due to these unique traits they are usually quick paced on attack and strategic on defence.
- The title of edge forward (numbered 2) comes from their placement on the forward side (left side) of the pitch and their position between the boundary and centre of the field of play. Therefore, this demands a high level of hand-eye coordination and skill to pass the oval ball across the pitch, connecting the boundary forward to their centre forward. On defence their main role is to keep the defensive line connected and prevent gaps from opening up in the middle.
- The title of centre forward (numbered 3) comes from their placement on the forward side (left side) of the pitch and their position in the centre of the field of play. Therefore, centre forward's must be able to connect the forwards and backs by passing the ball across the field. Usually the centre forward is the most experienced and skill player on the pitch, with the role of leading the team while defending. This requires them to have good ball handling skills and a tactical understanding of the game.
Backs
[edit]The backs main make up the right side of the field and similarly to the forwards comprise of 3 distinct positions; boundary, edge, and centre. Their main role is to score points for their team.
- The title of boundary back (numbered 6) comes from their placement on the back side (right side) of the pitch and their position close to the boundary side line. Therefore, boundary back's are usually specialised at defending against the boundary side line and are typically trained to cover larger amounts of space. Their position at the side of the pitch also allows them to chase kicks easier as they do not have to run passed as many opposing players. This makes the specialised position good at chasing after kicks to the right side of the field. Due to these unique traits they are usually quick paced on attack and strategic on defence.
- The title of edge back (numbered 5) comes from their placement on the back side (right side) of the pitch and their position between the boundary and centre of the field of play. Therefore, this demands a high level of hand-eye coordination and skill to pass the oval ball across the pitch, connecting the boundary back to their centre back. On defence their main role is to keep the defensive line connected and prevent gaps from opening up in the middle.
- The title of centre back (numbered 4) comes from their placement on the back side (right side) of the pitch and their position in the centre of the field of play. Therefore, centre back's must be able to connect the forwards and backs by passing the ball across the field. Usually the centre back is the most experienced and skill player on the pitch, with the role of leading the team while attacking. This requires them to have good ball handling skills and a tactical understanding of the game.
Variants
[edit]Indoor Scottish Footy
[edit]Currently there is only one variant known as Indoor Scottish Footy. This is a variation that allows play to take place in a closed or roofed pitch where kicks, players, and pitch size may be restricted. Indoor Scottish Footy is played on a 40m (44 yd) long and 20m (22 yd) wide pitch with 4 players from each team. The total team size had been reduced to 6 and 2 point goals have been removed due to kicking restrictions. Indoor Scottish Footy remains under the jurisdiction of the SFU.
