Hello there!

I am Saltymagnolia, but you can also call me Salty, or indeed anything, providing it doesn't overstep the invisible boundary into vulgarity. I am an author and amateur maritime historian from the United Kingdom. My username is a somewhat unsubtle nod to the Grateful Dead song, as well as my tendency to act in a somewhat cantankerous manner. I only use this username on Wikipedia; any other accounts of a similar name on different platforms are in no way affiliated with me.

I mostly find myself gravitating towards creating content of a historiographical nature, usually towards the maritime history of the Great Lakes, a region which for inconceivable reasons has fascinated and captivated me for over a decade. Despite taking a lengthy leave of absence due to chronic depression, I am making a concerted effort to return to the project I came to love and cherish over the near-decade I have been a part of it. My activity level will likely fluctuate in accordance with my mental state.

I originally joined Wikipedia under the name of GreatLakesShips (also known as GLS) in November 2017 as a naive and impressionable 13-year-old seeking a reprieve from the monotony of school's English classes, all the while occupying my wandering, errant mind with tasks I could easily translate into success, and thusly much needed gratification. I initially joined to correct a single error on an article I had viewed a documentary about. Upon diving further into the contents of Wikipedia, I learned about the dearth of content covering my field of interest, I decided to make a concerted effort to ameliorate it. My first article, covering the short service life and demise of the freighter William C. Moreland awakened the nascent historian within me, resulting of my further exploration of not only the various historical resources which continue to aid me, but also hone my writing skills, as well as discovering various mechanics of my chosen platform. As a result of creating several (albeit rather stubby) articles in my first few months, I felt proud to have made a difference. I even met a few people, most notably Kablammo, who continued to provide me with support and encouragement years on into my journey. My article on the freighter James Gayley proved to be a watershed moment within my writing journey. While I had previously heavily relied on sources compiled by other historians, this page marked the first time I researched and reconstructed the career of a ship with little else other than contemporaneous newspaper accounts, and vessel registries.

I hope to eventually create a WikiProject dedicated to the Great Lakes, entirely dependent on the number of potential participants I am able to secure. I have worked on two FAs, eighteen GAs, and have had several articles featured in the DYK section of the main page. It's safe to say I only really enjoy the aspects of Wikipedia which revolve around content creation/improvement, with little interest in its social or bureaucratic aspects. I later learned of a philosophical group for Wikipedians like myself, who known as exopedians. I mainly prefer to operate as a secondary player, safely ensconced in the background.

Aside from maritime history, I am predominantly interested in the history of the industrial revolution, my home country's railways, as well as music, which I frequently listen to while writing; the Metallica album Ride the Lightning in particular is a staple of my writing soundtrack.
