Croire (English translation: "To believe") is the twelfth studio album recorded by Canadian singer Natasha St-Pier. It was also her third album inspired by the life of Saint Thérèse of Lisieux, after Thérèse – Vivre d'amour (2013) and Aimer c'est tout donner (2018). The album was released in 2020 in both Canada and France.[1]

Conception and production

[edit]

The album Croire was released in 2020, and produced by Thomas Pouzin. St-Pier wrote three of the song texts ("Par amour" and "Peu m’importe"), which were set to music by Vincent Bidal (jazz pianist, composer and producer). In interview, she said: "This time I wanted to express what I feel without using Thérèse's words. Using my own words can help people know where I am in my spiritual journey. Especially since, for the first time, three of the album's texts are entirely my own work. I wanted to address Mary a little more, as Thérèse did, and speak directly to the public."[2]

The themes covered in the album ranged from love to maternity, and referred to Mother Teresa and the Virgin Mary as well as Saint Thérèse of Lisieux.[3][4] The singles released from the album were "Viens sois ma lumière" and "Sancta Maria".[5]

Release and response

[edit]

The album continued a turn to overtly Catholic devotional music evident in Natasha St-Pier's previous albums Thérèse – Vivre d'amour (2013) and Aimer c'est tout donner (2018). This direction indicated a notable artistic shift, given that her successful previous albums had been purely secular in content, notably De l'amour le mieux (2002), L'Instant d'après (2003), Longueur d'ondes (2006) and Natasha St-Pier (2008).[3][4] As with the previous album, her promotional tour was carried out mainly in Catholic churches, where the increasingly sold-out concerts showed that the public was receptive to her change in direction.[3]

In a 2024 interview, she was asked whether she feared being catalogued solely as a Christian singer. She responded that it was important for her to have feet both in the everyday world and a world where spirituality was essential; for her, the junction of the two worlds was essential.[4]
