Christopher Alexander Campbell is an American plastic and reconstructive surgeon known for his contributions to global cleft care and aesthetic surgery. He is the co-founder of a high-volume cleft surgery center in Assam, India, and Premium Care Plastic Surgery in Cartagena, Colombia. He co-developed the Unilateral Cleft Lip Surgical Outcomes Evaluation (UCL SOE) scale and the Unilateral Cleft Lip Severity Index (UCL CSI), tools widely used to assess cleft lip treatment outcomes. His work spans clinical care, surgical education, medical tourism, and international humanitarian service.

Early Life and Education

Campbell was born in Jefferson City, Missouri. He graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry and a minor in Mathematics from the University of Missouri-Columbia. He earned his Medical Doctorate from the University of Missouri School of Medicine, graduating magna cum laude and was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. He completed his residency in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the Los Angeles County + University of Southern California Medical Center, and a fellowship in Pediatric Plastic Surgery with Operation Smile International. He is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and serves as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Surgery at the Penn State Hershey College of Medicine.

Global Surgical Work and Humanitarian Contributions

Campbell served as the founding Medical Director and Chief of Surgery at a cleft surgery center in Assam, India, where he developed scalable models for surgical care in resource-limited settings.[1][2][3] In 2024, the center surpassed 25,000 free cleft surgeries.[4] Campbell has published extensively on cleft surgery outcomes and has led over 25 humanitarian missions with Operation Smile.

Premium Care Plastic Surgery

In 2012, Campbell co-founded Premium Care Plastic Surgery in Cartagena, Colombia, with Dr. Carolina Restrepo. The clinic serves international patients seeking medical tourism and comprehensive aesthetic procedures. Campbell has co-authored several of the largest peer-reviewed studies on plastic surgery tourism, safety, and patient outcomes.[5][6] He has also completed a study analyzing outcomes in 2,324 patients and 7,141 procedures, which is currently under peer review at Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Global Open.

He also co-founded Premium Care Kids, a nonprofit that provides free cleft surgeries to underserved children in Colombia.

Campbell achieved the top score (99%) on the American Board of Plastic Surgery Oral Exam in 2014. His surgical education contributions and cleft care delivery models have been cited for advancing sustainable global surgery practices.
