Dyslexia – The Beginning is a 2024 children’s picture book written by British author Marie Meehan and published by Austin Macauley Publishers.[1] Aimed at early readers aged 6 to 9,[2] the book introduces the topic of dyslexia through a first-person narrative and is designed to support young children and families at the start of a dyslexia diagnosis journey.
Overview
[edit]The story follows a child who learns they have dyslexia and begins documenting their thoughts and feelings in a “mission log” format.[3] The book explores themes of identity, emotional reassurance, and the importance of understanding neurodiversity at a young age. The tone is gentle and affirming, with the goal of reducing stigma and encouraging open conversations between children and caregivers.
Illustrated in colour and formatted for accessibility, Dyslexia – The Beginning is intended to be used in both home and educational settings. It is especially relevant to parents, SENCOs, and educators supporting children in the early stages of diagnosis.
