Jeremiah Diaz and his mother, Theresa, are preparing to move from Riverside to Newport Beach. This causes a strain in their relationship especially seeing as his father, Eddie, has been incarcerated since he was two years old. Meanwhile, Sandy, Kirsten and their daughter, Sophie Rose, make their relocation from Berkeley back to Newport for Sandy's retirement. Ryan is still living in Newport Beach and married to Gwyneth, Julie Cooper's cousin, and has a daughter named Goldie. Ryan is also CEO of Atwood Design Co., an architect company employing dozens of associates that aid in building homes across Orange County. Ryan and his family reunite with Sandy and Kirsten's by throwing them a welcome back party. It is here that Sophie Rose develops a crush on Scott, who is in attendance with his parents, Jeb and Reese Maitland, city politicians. After arriving in Newport Beach, Theresa finally tells Jeremiah the truth of why they're there: to meet Jeremiah's biological father— Ryan. At the party, Ryan walks in on Gwyneth kissing Jeb. Ryan confides in Sandy about his family problems. Jeremiah runs away back to Riverside. | |||||

Theresa pays Sandy a visit and asks for his help in finding Jeremiah. Kirsten urges Ryan to fight for his marriage despite Gwyneth's infidelity. Ryan confronts Gwyneth, leading to another argument. Sandy and Kirsten deduce that Orange County has drained Ryan of the person he used to be. Scott and his father, Jeb, argue over him kissing Gwyneth. Jeb strikes Scott in the face. Sophie Rose attends orientation at the Harbor School, which is now a public institution. Sandy and Theresa find Jeremiah in Riverside and bring him home. She refuses to tell Sandy the truth about why she decided to tell Jeremiah about Ryan. Sophie Rose meets Lolly Williams at orientation. Ryan gives Gwyneth an ultimatum— attend couple's therapy or divorce. Gwyneth agrees to Ryan's terms after talking with Goldie. Sandy shows up to the Atwood house with Theresa. Theresa tells Ryan that she lied seventeen years ago about the paternity of her baby. | |||||

Ryan is unable to cope with Theresa's news. Gwyneth tells Ryan she doesn't believe Theresa has good intentions. Ryan confides in Sandy and Kirsten. Theresa tells Ryan that she secretly conducted a paternity test and Eddie wasn't a match. Jeb announces to the Newport Union that he's running for mayor. Scott confronts his mother about his father's infidelity but she resorts to drinking instead. Theresa introduces Ryan to Jeremiah. Jeremiah tells Ryan that his real father is Eddie and will go to live with him when he's released from prison. Lolly visits Sophie Rose in an attempt to introduce her to her Newport friends. However, it soon becomes clear that Lolly had a falling out with her clique. Gwyneth visits Theresa and offers her $5,000 to leave Newport Beach for good. Scott deliberately crashes his father's Rolls-Royce. Kirsten helps Theresa to enroll Jeremiah at the Harbor School. After running off, Jeremiah bumps into Sophie Rose and Lolly at the pier. Jeremiah is then racially profiled and falsely accused of stealing. Ryan and Sandy come to his rescue. It's revealed that Theresa is secretly taking medication for internal pain. | |||||

Sandy confides in Kirsten about his skepticism regarding Theresa's motives for moving to Newport. Ryan tells Gwyneth that he wants to build a relationship with Jeremiah, which she's against. Jeremiah and Sophie Rose begin their first day at the Harbor School. Scott sneaks vodka into his hydroflask and brings it to school. Rory, head of the Newport Society, a philanthropic organization, gathers the town's housewives to plan their next event. Gwyneth and Reese clash at the meeting. Lolly is shunned by her former friends and decides to sit with Sophie Rose and Jeremiah during lunch. Meanwhile, Jeremiah struggles to fit in with his wealthy peers. Scott is caught with the vodka. Sophie Rose is paired up with Arthur for her lab class, who has a crush on her. However, she develops a crush on Scott. Sandy visits Theresa where she collapses. Ryan picks up Jeremiah from school to take him to his mother. Jeb bribes school officials to let Scott off the hook. Sophie Rose continues to bond with Lolly by revealing her crush on Scott. Gwyneth grows angry upon hearing that Ryan is at the hospital visiting Theresa. Theresa finally reveals the entire truth to Ryan: she decided to move to Newport and introduce Jeremiah to him because she's dying from ovarian cancer. Seeing as Eddie's release is approaching, she doesn't want Jeremiah living with him. She asks Ryan to take him into his home. | |||||
