Gladys Marie Lamy (née Walter; 18 June 1935 - 12 July 2023) was the first female licensed conveyancer licensed conveyancer in England. She was recognized as the first female and the first woman of color to hold the license (1987). Early Career

Lamy began her career in the Ministry of Defense, United Kingdom after which she worked in the office of Lord George Brown, George Brown, Baron George-Brown a former Labor Secretary of State. She subsequently joined the legal and parliamentary department of the London County Council (LCC), London County Council which eventually became the Greater London Council (GLC) Greater London Council

Later Career

1n 1969, Lamy became an assistant member of the Institute of Legal Executives Chartered Institute of Legal Executives and subsequently passed the Institute’s conveyancing examination at the higher fellowship level qualifying her as a legal conveyancer.

She made significant strides in property law following the introduction of the Administration of Justice Act - 1985 Part ii, [1985/61/contents] which allowed individuals with a decade of conveyancing experience to become licensed conveyancers after passing an exam. Lamy successfully completed this examination, earning the distinction of being England’s first female licensed conveyancer.

Licensed conveyancers are regulated by the Council for Licensed Conveyancers (https://www.regulatedprofessions.service.gov.uk/regulatory-authorities/ council-for-licensed-conveyancers) . In 1987, Lamy established her own practice, Lamy & Co. Licensed Conveyancers, located in the London Borough of Lambeth London Borough of Lambeth

Retirement

In addition to her legal career, Lamy has pursued education and volunteering in various fields. She completed a course in voluntary studies and philosophy at the University in Lampeter, Wales, University of Wales, Lampeter and volunteered as an advocate with the Westminster Advocacy Service, supporting senior residents, in the City of Westminster City of Westminster

Lamy is also the author of the fiction book “Dominic”. At 76, she became an accredited hypnotherapist, https://www.hypnotherapists.org.uk demonstrating her commitment to self-improvement and helping others.

Lamy has been featured in several newspapers, including The Times, Mauritius News, The Voice and Westminster and Pamlico News. She has also been interviewed on the radio program “Rice and Peas.”
