The history of the Republic of Georgia, from 1990 to 1992, covers the administration under the leadership of Zviad Gamsakhurdia in Georgia from the start of his chairmanship, presidency and his eventual downfall. During this period, Gamsakhurdia leadership oversees the final years of the Soviet Union and the transition to democracy, during which he declared Georgia to be an independent country on 9 April 1991, he became the country's first president for 8 months until he was deposed in a coup on 6 January 1992, the coup would later escalate into civil war. The civil war that occured made him fled to Chechnya, though living in exile, he still insist on using the title as the president of Georgia until his death during the civil war in 1993.
