Mahmoud Abuwarda (born 1990, Gaza) is a Palestinian composer, guitarist,[1] [2]and educator. His work spans film scores, symphonic compositions, and collaborative projects with international artists.

Early Life and Education

[edit]

Mahmoud Abuwarda was born in Gaza in 1990. He studied music theory and composition at Berklee College of Music. Prior to this, he honed his guitar skills at The Edward Said National Conservatory of Music - Birzeit university in Palestine, under the mentorship of renowned guitarist Pedro López de La Osa.

Career

[edit]

Abuwarda has created an extensive body of work, showcasing his versatility across a wide range of genres. His projects include film soundtracks, instrumental suites, and symphonic music, as well as contemporary music. His artistry is marked by orchestral finesse, which permeates every composition, and his work stands out for its emotional depth and unique sound.

He is also a dedicated educator, having taught at Zemas College in Istanbul.[3] From 2012 to 2022, he held multiple prestigious positions at The Edward Said National Conservatory of Music (ESNCM) – Birzeit University, including professor of composition, guitar teacher, music history teacher, music theory teacher, head of the guitar department, and academic supervisor.[4] [5][6][7][8][9]In this role, he mentored countless aspiring musicians and helped shape the next generation of music professionals.

Abuwarda is also a prominent member and main artist in the Dahaleez Collective,[10] an artistic group that brings together musicians, visual artists, and writers to explore and reinterpret contemporary Arab culture.

Collaboration with Alberto Nones

[edit]

Abuwarda's music has reached new audiences through collaborations with distinguished artists. One such collaboration is with the renowned Italian pianist Alberto Nones, who is recording Abuwarda's Nocturne No. 2, "Stars Over the Sleeping City"[11][12]. Nones, known for his work in the classical and contemporary music scenes, brings his virtuosity to Abuwarda’s evocative composition. This collaboration highlights the fusion of Western classical music with Abuwarda's distinctive Middle Eastern influences.

Julian Broughton and "Rubble of Houses"

[edit]

Abuwarda’s works have also garnered recognition in the classical music world, including a performance of his piano composition, "Rubble of Houses", by British pianist Julian Broughton. [13]This piece was performed at Anne’s Church in London, where Broughton introduced Abuwarda as a Palestinian composer before delivering a powerful rendition of the composition. The recording of this performance, available on Abuwarda's YouTube channel, captures both the depth of the piece and the praise from Broughton, who speaks about Abuwarda’s unique artistic voice and the emotional resonance of his music.

Mentorship and Influences

[edit]

Throughout his career, Mahmoud has had the privilege of learning from accomplished composers such as Maurice Saylor Houtaf Khoury, Julian Broughton, Nejc Kuhar, Mark Zaleski, David Gregory, Steven Kirby, Wissam Gibran, and Rick McLaughlin. Their guidance has had a significant impact on his artistic development and contributed to his unique musical perspective.

[edit]

Abuwarda has received several prestigious scholarships, including the 2015 Al-Qattan Scholarship in Performing Arts, the 2012 AFAC - The Arab Fund for Arts and Culture Scholarship, [14]and the Gary Burton Berklee College of Music Scholarship, in recognition of his talent and dedication to his craft.
