Oryol (Russian: Орёл, IPA: [ɐˈrʲɵl] ⓘ, lit. 'eagle') is a city and the administrative center of Oryol Oblast, Russia and the Orlovsky District (which it is not a part of). It is located approximately 368 kilometres (229 mi) southwest of Moscow. Oryol and the Oryol Oblast are part of the Central Federal District, as well as the Central Economic Region. It is designated as a City of Military Glory (since 27 April, 2007).
Etymology
[edit]The folk etymology links the name of the city with events, that supposedly happened during its founding in 1566. By decree of Tsar Ivan the Terrible, construction began of a fortified town to defend the southern borders of the Tsardom of Russia from invasions by Crimean Tatars. When an oak tree at the mouth of the Orlik and the Oka rivers had begun to be chopped, an eagle flew from atop. Thus Ivan IV decreed to name the town after the bird.
The scientific version hypothesizes that the name could be linked to the river Oryol
