Harinder Paul Singh Makkar is a German scientist, international consultant, and academic specializing in sustainable livestock production, bioeconomy, and the circular economy. He has served in senior roles at international organizations such as the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), and is widely recognized for his work in animal nutrition, feed evaluation, and agricultural biotechnology. Makkar has authored or edited over 60 FAO/IAEA publications and books, published more than 400 scientific articles, and is frequently cited in global agricultural development forums.

Early life and education
Makkar earned his B.Sc. from Panjab University, India in 1974 and his M.Sc. in Dairying from the National Dairy Research Institute, Karnal in 1976. He received his Ph.D. in Agricultural Biochemistry from the University of Nottingham in 1985. In 1998, he completed a habilitation (Dr. Habil) in Tropical Livestock Nutrition from the University of Hohenheim, Germany. He is also fluent in German and Spanish.

Career
Makkar began his scientific career at the Indian Veterinary Research Institute and later worked as a Senior Scientist from 1986 to 1991. He joined the University of Hohenheim as a visiting scientist under an Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship and later became a Guest Professor and Laboratory Manager. He currently holds the position of Adjunct Professor at the University of Hohenheim, Germany, and serves as Guest Professor at the Nanjing Agricultural University and Lanzhou University in China, as well as the Mongolian University of Life Sciences in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.

Between 1999 and 2017, Makkar worked with the International Atomic Energy Agency and the FAO, serving as a Project Manager and Animal Production Officer, respectively. His work focused on the application of nuclear and biotechnological methods in sustainable livestock development, animal feeding systems, and nutrient use efficiency.
