Christopher Clarkson (22 November 1938 – 31 March 2017) was a British conservator of manuscripts and rare books,[1][2][3] specializing in the period from the early codex to the Renaissance.[4] He was the first Conservation Officer at the Bodleian Library at Oxford, and he established the book conservation training program at West Dean College.[5] He trained two generations of book conservation students over the course of his career.[4]
Early life and training
[edit]Clarkson was born in the southeast London neighborhood of Bexley to parents Ruth (née Hopgood), a shop assistant, and Victor Clarkson, an electrician.[6] He was sent to Camberwell School of Art and Crafts at age 13 and received a national diploma in design. Clarkson graduated from the Royal College of Art in 1963, where he was invited to study fine bookbinding. He then worked as an instructor at the Plymouth College of Art teaching graphic design, wood engraving, writing and illuminating, letter cutting, and fine bookbinding. Later, he worked at Douglas Cockerell & Son restoring early printed books and manuscripts, and then with the bookbinder Roger Powell.[6]
Career
[edit]Clarkson taught courses on historical bookbinding structures at the Rare Book School in Virginia from 1983 to 2013.[7]
Awards and honors
[edit]In 2004, Clarkson received the Royal Warrant Holders Association’s Plowden Medal in recognition of his significant contributions advancing the conservation profession.[7] He was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of the Arts London in 2012.[5]
