Sumi Anjuman
[edit]Sumi Anjuman (born on 1st January, 1989) is a visual artist from Bangladesh known for her deeply political and poetic engagement with gender, memory, and resistance. Her artistic practice navigates the complex terrain of Bangladesh’s conservative Muslim socio-cultural framework, addressing the lived realities of women and gender-divergent communities through photography-based visual storytelling. Drawing from personal and collective experiences, Anjuman explores themes of gender-specific oppression and healing, positioning her work as a form of nonviolent protest and quiet resistance. Central to her practice is a distinctive documentary approach she terms “healing through creation”, which emphasizes collaboration with subjects to generate layered, time-transcending narratives. Her visual language incorporates staged photography, hand-stitching, textual elements, moving images, re-photographic techniques, and archival materials to confront dominant narratives and open space for alternative ways of seeing and remembering.
Anjuman is currently based in Dhaka, where she teaches at Counter Foto – A Centre for Visual Art. She earned her Master’s degree in Photography & Society from the Royal Academy of Art (KABK) in The Hague, Netherlands, and previously completed a three-year professional diploma in photography at Pathshala South Asian Media Institute in Dhaka.
Her work continues to engage with intergenerational trauma, feminist resistance, and the transformative potential of image-making in postcolonial South Asia.
