Sometime in 2005 I added the Wikipedia search box to Firefox and my life changed, suddenly enlightenment was only a tab away. I started correcting typos, adding a few paragraphs here and there, until I set myself the challenge of making a serious contribution, of finding a deficient article and bringing it up to standard. The Core Contest, a push to improve flawed or incomplete articles on crucial topics, gave me the impetus needed, and the list of entries confronted me with Pop music, the only candidate I could possibly contemplate. Although a musicologist and a melomaniac, pop is by no account one of my favourite styles, but at least I was versed on its history. My only significant contribution to this encyclopædia, therefore, is encapsulated between these two diffs, 26 November and 27 December 2007.
During the month it took me to research and write the page I discovered the other side of Wikipedia, the talk pages and userspace, the noticeboards, commitees and IRC channels. I didn't like what I found, and as I finish the rewrite I've decided to end my editing days. I shall continue to use Wikipedia as my main reference but never again will I click an [edit] link.

The contest department of the Military history WikiProject aims to motivate increased quality in military history articles by offering a form of friendly competition for project members making improvements to them. The primary contest available is a simple rolling competition that awards points for improving articles. The contest runs from the first to last day of each month.
- Guild of Copy Editors' editing drive. The July 2025 backlog drive is a one-month-long effort by the Guild of Copy Editors to reduce the backlog of articles that require copy editing: those carrying the {{copy edit}} tag (also {{awkward}}, {{copy edit section}}, {{inappropriate person}}, and {{copy edit inline}}, and their redirects) or are listed on the GOCE Requests page. Weekly highlight
- The CampaignEvents extension has been enabled on all Wikipedias. The extension makes it easier to organize and participate in collaborative activities, like edit-a-thons and WikiProjects, on the wikis. The extension has three features: Event Registration, Collaboration List, and Invitation List. To request the extension for your wiki, visit the Deployment information page.
Updates for editors
- AbuseFilter maintainers can now match against IP reputation data in AbuseFilters. IP reputation data is information about the proxies and VPNs associated with the user's IP address. This data is not shown publicly and is not generated for actions performed by registered accounts. [1]
- Hidden content that is within collapsible parts of wikipages will now be revealed when someone searches the page using the web browser's "Find in page" function (Ctrl+F or ⌘F) in supporting browsers. [2][3]
A new feature, called Favourite Templates, will be deployed later this week on all projects (except English Wikipedia, which will receive the feature next week), following a piloting phase on Polish and Arabic Wikipedia, and Italian and English Wikisource. The feature will provide a better way for new and experienced contributors to recall and discover templates via the template dialog, by allowing users to put templates on a special "favourite list". The feature works with both the visual editor and the wikitext editor. The feature is a community wishlist focus area.
View all 31 community-submitted tasks that were resolved last week. For example, a bug was fixed that had caused some Notifications to be sent multiple times. [4]
