FINIS Inc
[edit]FINIS Inc, is an American manufacturer of competitive swimwear and swimming equipment . Its headquarters are in California.
History
[edit]FINIS Inc. is an American company founded in 1993 by Olympic gold medalist swimmer Pablo Morales and former water polo player John Mix. The company produces monofins and swimming related accessories[1][2].
Morales is involved in product testing, intellectual property management, and international distribution, while Mix oversees sales and U.S. operations[1].
Monofinning, a swimming technique involving a single-blade fin, evolved from European fin swimming, which originated in the late 1960s. The monofin technique gained traction in the following decade[1].
Products
[edit]Audio Devices
[edit]In 2007, FINIS released the SwiMP3, an underwater MP3 player using bone-conduction technology to transmit sound through cheekbones[3]. In 2013, it introduced Neptune, a bone-conduction MP3 player that retained the cheekbone-mounted speaker design while adding improved controls and visual feedback[4].
Wearable Monitoring Devices
[edit]In 2009, FINIS launched the AquaPulse, a device that attaches to a goggle strap and uses an infrared earlobe sensor to monitor heart rate, delivering updates via bone conduction[5]. The Swimsense Performance Monitor (2010) is a wrist-worn device that tracks stroke type, laps, splits, and estimated calorie use. A 2017 PLOS ONE study found it generally accurate in detecting stroke type, though some timing discrepancies were noted[6]. The Hydro Tracker GPS (circa 2012) was designed for open-water swimming and cycling and recorded route, speed, and distance data[7]. The Hydro Hip is a resistance-training belt developed to encourage hip-driven rotation during freestyle and backstroke swimming[8].
Learn-to-Swim Products
[edit]The company also offers a reusable swim diaper used in youth swimming instruction[9].
Research and Scientific Studies
[edit]A study published in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research reported an association between training with FINIS bone-conduction music devices and improved 50-yard freestyle performance compared to training without music[10].
