DeepDrive

[edit]

DeepDrive is a company based in Munich that develops electric motor technology for the automotive industry. The company developed a patented Dual Rotor motor topology designed to enhance the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of electric vehicles (EVs). [1] It collaborates with multiple automotive manufacturers and received industry recognition for its innovations in electric propulsion systems. In 2024, DeepDrive received the German Innovation Award for its developments in electric motor technology. [2]

Technology

[edit]

DeepDrive’s core technology is a Dual Rotor, Radial Flux electric motor, which differs from conventional single-rotor designs. This system employs two rotors, one positioned inside and the other outside the stator, making better use of the rotor's magnetic field. According to industry sources, this design enhances efficiency and reduces material costs compared to traditional electric motors.[3]

The motor is designed for integration into both in-wheel and central drive configurations. The in-wheel motor system places the drive unit directly within the vehicle's wheels, potentially allowing for increased vehicle design flexibility. The central drive configuration functions as a conventional motor within the vehicle’s chassis, providing power to the drivetrain.[4]

Industry Collaboration

[edit]

DeepDrive has been engaged in development projects with several global automotive manufacturers. By 2024, the company reported collaboration with eight of the ten largest automakers on pilot projects involving its electric motor technology.[5] These collaborations remain in the early stages, with prototype testing underway.[6]
