Teachers as social change agents can be impactful to their students, faculty, community, and the world. Bourn<Teachers as agents of Social Change, 2016> highlighted that the role of teachers promotes and transmits specific perspectives and methods toward learning. The teacher's role can not be seen as trivial, but powerful for transformative changes in students<Fisher, Making Hope practical and Despair Unconvincing, 2001). The teacher's role can not be seen as trivial, but powerful for transformative changes in students. In addition, they continued that professional development among teachers, the development of strong ethical values, and commitment to social justice encourage inclusion in the learning <Bourn, 2016> thus providing students with the equity in education they need.
Teachers as social agents of change need to be advocates. This is the beginning of any type of change. Advocacy means raising awareness for any issue or highlighting the needs of others.<Bradley- Levine, Advocacy as a Practice of Critical Leadership, 2018> revealed that the primary goal of teachers' advocacy is supporting their students. Teachers have gone beyond the call of duty to ensure that social justice and equity are promoted in their classrooms. This advocacy entails speaking to parents, buying supplies for their students, and interventions for students for social services.
Teachers as change agents are also required to possess leadership skills. Schulz <Walden University Center for Social Change,2018> believed that there are eight features needed for social change to come to life, but he described leadership skills as essential for an effective change agent. He stated that teachers as change agents should have the skills to empower and facilitate the work of others. In addition, agents of social change should have the ability to inspire and motivate others to change as well. The ability to possess leadership skills as a social change agent can have a domino effect, as the change begins with self, then groups will change, then organizations change, and then communities. A leader would be needed to empower and motivate others around them through the process.
