The statue of Frédéric Chopin (Portuguese: Estátua de Frédéric Chopin; Polish: Pomnik Fryderyka Chopina) is a bronze statue in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, placed at the General Tibúrcio Square in the neighbourhood of Urca. It is dedicated to Frédéric Chopin, a 19th-century composer and virtuoso pianist of the Romantic period, depicted sitting on a bench. The monument was designed by August Zamoyski and unveiled on 1 September 1944.

History

The sculpture dedicated to Frédéric Chopin, a Polish-born 19th-century composer and virtuoso pianist of the Romantic period, was proposed by the Polish community in Rio de Janeiro, following the German invasion on Poland on 1 September 1939. Sculptor August Zamoyski, who at the time was a professor at the National School of Fine Arts in Rio de Janeiro, was commissioned to make the statue.

It was unveiled on 1 September 1944 to mark the 5th anniversary of the German invasion on Poland during the Second World War

Design

The bronze statue depicts Frédéric Chopin, and has a height of 1.1 m. It is placed on a granite pedestal, with words "Chopin" inscribed at the front. On its right side it has an inscription in Portuguese which reads:
