John Knox (1778 - 5 January 1845) was a Scottish painter.[1]
Life
[edit]His father was John Knox Snr. (26 August 1742 - c. 1824), a yarn merchant from Paisley.
His mother was Catherine Robertson (born c. 1750). John [Snr.] and Catherine married on 13 February 1773 in Paisley Low Church, Renfrewshire.
John Knox was born in Paisley in 1778.
The family moved to Glasgow in 1799 and his father set up a business there John Knox and Sons, selling thread and yarn.
He married Sarah Scott (c. 1782 - 24 May 1853). They married on 18 March 1803 in Crosthwaite Church, near Keswick.
They had a son Thomas Knox (c. 1810 - 13 April 1850). He also became an artist. He died of tuberculosis.
Art
[edit]He studied under Alexander Nasmyth.
He then began teaching in Glasgow.
He taught Horatio McCulloch, William Leighton Leitch, Daniel Macnee, Thomas Ritchie.
Death
[edit]He died in Keswick in Cumbria on 5 January 1845.[2] He was buried on 10 January 1845 at Crosthwaite.[3]
