Zacchaeus Akingbade Ademuwagun ( 17 February 1934 – 16 January 2011) was a pioneering Nigerian Public Health Educator and Africa's first Professor of Health Education. He was known for his contributions to school health, community health promotion, indigenous health systems research, and for his extensive work with the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Nigerian government to advance health education policy and practice..[1]

Early life and education

Born on February 17, 1934, in the quiet town of Ode Aye, Okitipupa, in the present-day Ondo State, Nigeria. His educational journey began at Methodist Primary School in Ode Aye and continued at Wesley College, Ibadan, between 1949 and 1952. He later entered the esteemed University College, Ibadan (now the University of Ibadan), where he studied from 1957 to 1962. He secured a Rockefeller Foundation scholarship, which enabled him to travel to the United States. There, he earned a master's degree in science education and Cultural Foundations of Education from Boston University and a PhD in Public Health from the University of California, Berkeley in 1965.[2]

Academic Career

'The Public Health Professor started off his teaching career at his alma mater, Wesley College, Ibadan. He also taught at Igbobi College and the Federal Advanced Teachers College, both in Lagos. At the higher education level, he taught at the University of Lagos between 1966 and 1972. The rest of his teaching career was spent at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, from 1972 to 1990.

In 1977, Ademuwagun became the first professor of health education in Africa [3]

In 1972, he was appointed first Project Director at the African Regional Health Education Centre (ARHEC). ARHEC is a World Health Organisation (WHO) sponsored programme in collaboration with the Department of Preventive and Social Medicine, UCH and the Federal Ministry of Health, Nigeria. After his official retirement from the University of Ibadan in 1990, Professor Ademuwagun's service to the nation and the continent continued. He was appointed Chief Consultant on Primary Health Care by the Federal Government of Nigeria, and he continued to work with the WHO until 2010.[4]

Major contributions

'In 1980, he became the inaugural chairman of the World Health Organisation's HIV/AIDS awareness campaign in Africa, leading early efforts to coordinate public health responses to the emerging epidemic. He was also the founding president of the Nigerian School Health Association (NSHA) from 1975 to 1992, an organisation dedicated to promoting school health programs nationwide.[2]

From 1979 to 1983, he was appointed by the Ondo State Government as a Special Adviser on Health Education and Welfare and served as Chairman of the Ondo State Health Management Board. In 1981, Chief Adekunle Ajasin, the Governor, announced the creation of a multi-campus university as part of the 4th National Development Plan. he served on the 17-member Consultative Committee tasked with developing the university's blueprint and acted as the Project Director.[2]

Honours and Recognition

A Fellow of the Royal Society of Public Health. In 1981, he was awarded honorary citizenship in both Atlanta, Georgia and Tuskegee, Alabama, while visiting the United States as a special guest of the WHO and the U.S. State Health and Human Resources Departments. Ademuwagun is remembered as one of the pioneers of health education in Nigeria. His emphasis on blending indigenous knowledge with modern health systems influenced generations of public health practitioners, educators, and policymakers across Africa.[2]

On January 16, 2011, Professor Zacchaeus Akingbade Ademuwagun passed away in Houston, Texas, USA, just a month before his 77th birthday. He was 76.[4]
