History
[edit]The first attempt to tabulate the most popular songs in West Germany was made by the magazine Der Automatenmarkt. The publication began to track jukebox data in late 1953 and listed "Es hängt ein Pferdehalfter an der Wand" as the most played song of December 1953 in the January 1954 issue. In April 1954, the magazine published its first full chart with twenty positions. Der Automatenmarkt continued to publish its chart on a monthly with around thirty positions.
In July 1959, the newly established magazine, Musikmarkt issued its own single chart, which also included sales and airplay data. Freddy Quinn's "Die Gitarre und das Meer" was the first number-one on the Musikmarkt Hit-Parade. GfK only considers the Musikmarkt charts as its predecessor.
