"Unravelling" is a song by English rock band Muse, due to be released as a single on 20 June 2025.[1]
Pre-release
[edit]In February 2025, Muse bassist Chris Wolstenholme opened up on the future of the band following 2022's Will of the People, stating that the band would be returning to the studio "in the next couple of months" to work on new material. Wolstenholme also discussed the possibility of a 2026 release for Muse's tenth studio album.[2] The announcement came ahead of Muse's planned summer shows in Europe, beginning in June.
On 20 May 2025, Muse's social media accounts began posting cryptic images and videos, teasing new material on the way. This included an image of Muse bassist Chris Wolstenholme engulfed in orange lighting, with the caption "An insect trapped in amber",[3] an image of drummer Dominic Howard engulfed in orange lighting, accompanied by a mosquito emoji and orange heart emoji,[4] and a video of Muse's performance of "Mercy" in 2015, which distorted halfway through to display the words "I'm a static hum", before returning to normal.[5] The cryptic posting culminated in the week leading up to the single's announcement, with the band posting a video with distorted sound of what was believed to be brand new material on 11 June 2025, a day before the band was due to kick off their European shows for the summer.[6]
During their intimate show in Helsinki, on 12 June 2025, Muse opened the show with the debut of "Unravelling".[7][8]
Release
[edit]"Unravelling" is due to be released across streaming platforms on 20 June 2025.[1]
Writing and composition
[edit]"Unravelling" is the first Muse song to feature an eight-string guitar,[9] teased by frontman Matt Bellamy a few weeks prior.[10] The song has been described as "heavy" and features "digital hums and tension" before "detonating into a riff-heavy meltdown",[11] with the band "travelling into a darker, djent-ier world".[9]
