Two Sisters and a Husband is a 2022 Indian Hindi-language drama film written and directed by Shlok Sharma. It premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York City in June 2022, where it was featured in the International Narrative Competition section. Set in a remote Himalayan town, the film depicts the interpersonal complexities that emerge between a man and two sisters following an elopement.

Plot

[edit]

The film follows Rajat, a hotel employee who elopes with Amrita, leaving behind their families. The couple settles in a remote Himalayan town and is soon joined by Amrita’s younger sister, Tara. Under pressure from Rajat's father, he enters into a marriage with Tara, despite his unresolved emotional connection with Amrita. The resulting arrangement leads to ongoing tension and conflict among the three.[1]

As the story progresses, Rajat engages in additional relationships outside the household, including with a guest at the hotel where he works. His employer, Bhed Singh, is portrayed as abusive and controlling, both emotionally and physically, toward his staff. Rajat’s strained relationship with his father—who refuses to support his decision to marry Amrita—further contributes to his emotional instability. The film includes depictions of conflict, emotional distress, and self-harm among its central characters.[2]

Cast

[edit]
  • Dinker Sharma as Rajat, a hotel employee
  • Avani Rai as Tara, Amrita's younger sister
  • Manya Grover as Amrita
  • Himansh Kohli as Bhed Singh, Rajat’s employer and a former royal

Production

[edit]

The film was produced by Fundamental Pictures and co-written by Sharma and Shilpa Srivastava. It was filmed in Himachal Pradesh using a small production crew, with natural lighting and handheld cinematography. Photographer Avani Rai, daughter of documentary filmmaker Raghu Rai, made her acting debut in the film.[3][4]

Release

[edit]

Two Sisters and a Husband premiered at the 2022 Tribeca Film Festival, where it was included in the International Narrative Competition. It was one of the few Indian films featured at the festival that year. The film was subsequently screened at various international film festivals but did not have a wide theatrical release in India.[5][6]

Reception

[edit]

The film received generally positive reviews from critics. Film Companion described it as "a brooding exploration of moral ambiguity and emotional entrapment." The Hindu highlighted the film's setting and performances, noting the director’s restrained approach to building tension.[7]
