The Myth is a Maltese rock band[1] formed in 1990, known for blending rock with acoustic and folk influences. The band gained popularity through radio air play in the 1990s and continued evolving over the decades. Their debut album, Dreams, was released in 2011. The Myth's current lineup includes Dion Farrell (guitar and vocals), Mark Galea (drums), Patrick Mifsud (bass), Stephen Zammit (keyboard), and Claudio Sciberras (guitar).[2]

History

[edit]

Early career (1990–1996)

[edit]

The band was created in September 1990 by vocalist Dion Farrell and guitarist Mark Galea. Their first live performance took place in November 1990.[3]

During their early years, The Myth blended original compositions with cover songs, characterized by extended guitar solos and rhythmically driven bass lines.[4] Two early singles, "Can't Stop The Fire" and "Midnight," received airplay on Maltese radio and television, but they were not commercially released.

Experimental phase (1996–2005)

[edit]

Following early exposure, the band began experimenting with a more acoustic, folk-inspired sound. They began to incorporate instruments such as pan pipes and tambourines alongside their original instruments.

Britpop phase (2005–2011)

[edit]

During this time period The Myth adopted a pop-rock style. Originally written in 1996, the track "Sworn Independent" remained unreleased until 2007, marking a shift back toward a pop-rock sound. Subsequent tracks, including "Star" and "Animal," were released as singles.[5]

In 2009, lead vocalist Dion Farrell was a finalist in the international Song of the Year songwriting competition.[6]

On August 8, 2011, The Myth released their debut album, Dreams, a compilation of singles from 2005-2011. The band was also nominated for Best Website at the Malta Music Awards later that year.[7]

Pop Rock phase (2011–present)

[edit]

The band maintained a pop-rock style, releasing songs such as "Sadness in Your Eyes". A dance remix of the track by Toby Farrugia (a.k.a. DJ Toby) was featured in the film Silhouette (2013), alongside the original version.
