The Lean Startup: How Today’s Entrepreneurs Use Continuous Innovation to Create Radically Successful Businesses is a 2011 book by American entrepreneur Eric Ries outlining his lean startup methodology for developing businesses and products.[1]
Ries proposes that startups can shorten their product development cycles by using "just-in-time scalability," which involves releasing a minimum viable product (MVP) and refining it based on customer feedback.[2]
Ries developed the lean startup methodology from his experiences as a startup advisor, employee, and founder.[3][4] Ries has said that the failure of his first startup, Catalyst Recruiting, was due to an insufficient understanding of the target market and excessive focus on a single product vision.[5][6][7]
He later worked at There, Inc., a virtual world platform.[5][6] In both cases, Ries identified a mismatch between product development efforts and customer needs, which informed his later work on the startup process.[1]
The methodology draws from principles of lean manufacturing and agile development. It emphasizes experimentation, customer feedback, and iterative design over detailed planning and intuition.[8][9]
Companies cited in the book include Alphabet Energy of California, Dropbox, Wealthfront,[10] and General Electric (GE).[11]
Reception
[edit]According to the publisher, The Lean Startup has sold over one million copies and has been translated into more than thirty languages.[12] It also appeared on The New York Times Best Sellers list.[13]
Ethan Mollick, an associate professor at the Wharton School of Business, has raised concerns about the book's emphasis on engaging with customers as soon as possible, arguing that, regarding new technologies, customers often do not know what they want. Mollick also criticized the business model canvas, claiming that it overlooks a key question for startups: "What is your hypothesis about the world based on your unique knowledge and beliefs?" However, he supported the method’s emphasis on rapid experimentation and feedback.[14]
