Province parameters
[edit]The two letter abbreviations for provinces are capitalised (for example "MB" for Manitoba), yet the template allows only lower case ("mb"). Would it possible to amend the template to also accept upper case for the province parameters? --Jameboy (talk) 12:26, 15 June 2024 (UTC)
Provincial importance parameters
[edit]Similar to the above discussion on 9 April 2024, I would like to see provincial importance parameters added to this template so that I can better sort out the articles for WP:NOVASCOTIA by their importance to the province. I don't really see any reason why we shouldn't. Any thoughts? MediaKyle (talk) 17:18, 7 April 2025 (UTC)
- Example pls Template:WikiProject Canada/sandbox Moxy🍁 07:16, 10 April 2025 (UTC)
- I wouldn't know where to start, but I'm guessing it would be done in the same way as how Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver were given a separate importance value. I mostly just want an ns-importance value personally but I see no reason why every province can't have one. MediaKyle (talk) 10:07, 10 April 2025 (UTC)
- It's not difficult, mainly because the categories already exist. The main thing to consider is: if the parameter for the province importance is blank or absent, should the importance for Canada as a whole be used instead? In this edit, I have shown two different ways of coding an importance parameter.
- The one for Ontario adds a new
|on-importance=
parameter, to populate the relevant subcategory of Category:Ontario articles by importance; if blank or omitted, articles will be placed in Category:Unknown-importance Ontario articles regardless of how|importance=
is set - The one for Quebec adds a new
|qc-importance=
parameter, to populate the relevant subcategory of Category:Quebec articles by importance; if blank or omitted, the value of|importance=
will be used instead, so articles will only be placed in Category:Unknown-importance Quebec articles if both of these params are blank or absent
- The one for Ontario adds a new
- All of this is ignored if the relevant province parameter -
|on=yes
or|qc=yes
- is not set. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 17:59, 10 April 2025 (UTC)- Thanks for the demonstration. I thought about it and I think the first option would be most suitable given the purpose of sorting articles by importance. Would be nice if there was some way to automatically assign low importance to all of the geography articles though, that way we don't have to go and assign an importance to every one of the hundreds of community geostubs. MediaKyle (talk) 14:26, 11 April 2025 (UTC)
- OK, this edit for Nova Scotia adds a new
|ns-importance=
parameter, to populate the relevant subcategory of Category:Nova Scotia articles by importance; if blank or omitted, the value of|geography=
is tested, and if that evaluates to a "yes" value,|ns-importance=low
will be implied, so articles will only be placed in Category:Unknown-importance Nova Scotia articles if (i)|ns-importance=
is blank or absent and (ii)|geography=
is blank, absent or evaluates to a "no" value. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 19:07, 11 April 2025 (UTC)

As discussed above, I would like to add an ns-importance parameter in the same manner as this diff provided by Redrose64.
In addition, similar to the edit request on 13 April 2024, please add "TF_(number)_MAIN_CAT = WikiProject (wikiproject) articles" to Nova Scotia in the same manner as it was done for New Brunswick so that WP:NOVASCOTIA can also use the recognized content bot. Thanks, MediaKyle (talk) 01:32, 16 April 2025 (UTC)
Partly done ..... I've implemented the first part of this request. Can we get the exact coding for the second request. Moxy🍁 01:56, 16 April 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks a lot. Guess I should've been more specific on the second part, see this example for what I believe is how you do the second part of the request. MediaKyle (talk) 02:04, 16 April 2025 (UTC)
Done....ping back if there's a problem Moxy🍁 03:31, 16 April 2025 (UTC)
- @MediaKyle: In your original request of 17:18, 7 April 2025 (UTC) I got the impression that you wanted province importance for all provinces, although Nova Scotia was the one that you mainly wanted this for. Is it not required for the other nine provinces? --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 17:15, 16 April 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks for reaching out. That was my initial thought, but I realized after the fact that there doesn't seem to be a lot of will to make those sweeping changes as evidenced by the edit request on 13 April 2024. Given the relative inactivity of most provincial WikiProjects at this time, I didn't know if it was worth the trouble to look for consensus on the topic. I generally like to approach the provincial WikiProjects in a "if you build it they will come" mindset so I definitely wouldn't be opposed to adding it to every province. MediaKyle (talk) 17:19, 16 April 2025 (UTC)
- I support adding importance parameters for all provincal and territorial WPs. Volcanoguy 17:45, 7 May 2025 (UTC)
- Meant to reply to this before. After my experience with it so far, I'd probably do it on a case-by-case basis, as implementation could vary between WikiProjects and it takes some time to sort them all out... As per the discussion I just started below. Was there a specific province you wanted to add an importance parameter to? MediaKyle (talk) 16:50, 14 May 2025 (UTC)
- If I had to choose a specific province it would be British Columbia since I mainly work on articles relating to BC. Volcanoguy 05:28, 15 May 2025 (UTC)
- I'd like to fix the stuff in the next section before adding more provinces. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 16:10, 15 May 2025 (UTC)

Nova Scotia importance parameter
[edit]I've been making good use of the parameter added as per the last discussion, but since then I've encountered two main issues:
- There is currently 332 redirect class pages marked as low importance instead of NA, presumably due to the fact that articles marked as geography are automatically assigned low importance. I'm guessing this can be solved somehow via a tweak to the template.
- Now that I've gone through and set importance for pretty well all of the articles that need a separate importance value, I'm left with about 3,000 stubs and 1,800 starts with no importance value. I've realized it's impractical to add them manually, and not having them properly sorted is an impediment to other editors. Is this an issue that should be solved via a template edit, or perhaps a bot request to add ns-importance to all the remaining articles? It's worth noting that after this I intend to use either a bot or AWB to add the WikiProject Nova Scotia tag to any applicable articles within the Nova Scotia category, as I've encountered a great deal that are missing it, and there is a benefit to having those initially classed as "???" importance so they can be sorted manually. Not sure how exactly to go about this.
Thanks, MediaKyle (talk) 16:47, 14 May 2025 (UTC)
- Redirs should automatically pick up NA-importance, I'll see if it can be coded in.
- Stubs and starts should not be NA-importance. NA is short for Non-Article - stubs and starts are definitely articles, albeit rather short on content. In mianspace, NA should only be used for redirects (see above) and dab pages. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 21:56, 14 May 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks for replying. Sorry if I was unclear, but what I meant was I want to automatically assign low importance to the remainder of the articles that don't have an ns-importance value, as I think I've sufficiently elevated the importance of all articles that need it and the rest will match up with the low importance of the standard parameter. I'm trying to determine whether a bot-based solution or a template edit would be the best way to get all those remaining articles sorted into low importance. Don't worry, I'm not setting stubs and starts as NA. Just hard to articulate this stuff sometimes. MediaKyle (talk) 22:05, 14 May 2025 (UTC)
- The low-importance redirects problem should be fixed with this edit. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 16:54, 15 May 2025 (UTC)

Description of suggested change: Please adjust the Nova Scotia importance parameter as Redrose64 did in this edit so that redirects no longer show up as low importance. Thanks, MediaKyle (talk) 14:27, 19 May 2025 (UTC)
