mvp_year and captain_year fields

[edit]

Per discussion at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject College football#mvp_year and captain_year fields for Infobox college sports team season, it looks like the best move is to remove mvp_year, mvp2_year, captain_year, captain2_year, etc from this template. Frietjes, when you have a chance, can you help with this? Thanks, Jweiss11 (talk) 03:32, 8 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Also, we need to add a couple more captains fields here, to service up to eight. Thanks, Jweiss11 (talk) 03:44, 8 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Bagumba, Dissident93: perhaps one of you can help here? I can update the template documentation. Jweiss11 (talk) 03:30, 11 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
So just to be clear, all the parameters under labels 37, 38, and 39 are to be removed? ~ Dissident93 (talk) 03:35, 11 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
We want the MVP and captain fields to remain, just the parenetical years to go away. So just the parameters that end in _year go away under labels 37, 38, 39, 43, and 44. Those should also be removed at the very of the code that assigns to Category:Pages using infobox college sports team season with unknown parameters. Jweiss11 (talk) 03:41, 11 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Got it, but shouldn't they remain as an unknown parameter for maintenance reasons until they no longer exist in any template? ~ Dissident93 (talk) 19:42, 11 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
No, the exact opposite. That code at the bottom lists all the known parameters. If we want instances of captain_year to populate at Category:Pages using infobox college sports team season with unknown parameters, then we need to remove captain_year from that code. Also, can you add fields for captain7 and captain8? Jweiss11 (talk) 20:41, 11 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
 Done. Only thing left to fix is the documentation. ~ Dissident93 (talk) 23:26, 11 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Awesome. Thanks for your help. I'll take care of updating the documentation. Jweiss11 (talk) 23:41, 11 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Cleanup

[edit]

Primefac, we have eliminated several fields from this template:

  • mvp_year
  • mvp2_year
  • captain_year
  • captain2_year
  • captain3_year
  • captain4_year
  • captain5_year
  • captain6_year
  • altcaptain1_year
  • altcaptain2_year

The tracking category, Category:Pages using infobox college sports team season with unknown parameters now has nearly 2,000 articles in it. The vast majority of these are basketball articles like 1896–97 Nebraska Cornhuskers men's basketball team, where one or more of the ten fields above are entered, but with no value. Can we use PrimeBOT to clean this up? Thanks, Jweiss11 (talk) 19:11, 12 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Sure, I'll take a look. Primefac (talk) 14:33, 13 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Primefac, any thoughts about this yet? I see you changed the coding of this template to excluded unknown parameters with no value from this tracking category. Ideally, we want to kill all the instances of these unknown parameters, whether they have values or not. Jweiss11 (talk) 18:07, 24 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I do not agree with the philosophy that an invalid but unused parameter is a bad thing, even if it does mean slowly having to remove them as people try to fill them in. With the tracking cat only having a few hundred pages, an AWB run would be better to handle them. Primefac (talk) 00:16, 7 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Well, that is a curious philosophy. An invalid but unused parameter isn't the worst thing, but it would certainly be better not to have them. Including the invalid but unused cases, there were more like 1,900 articles. Cleaning that up seems like the sort of tedious task that is perfect for a bot run. mvp field labels

[edit]

When the mvp and mvp2 fields are populated, as seen at 1959 Colorado Buffaloes football team, two separate MVP labels are rendered, one for each field. We'd be better off with a single label "MVPs", as is the case with labels for multiple captains, as seen at 1964 Colorado Buffaloes football team. Dissident93 and Frietjes, can either of you help with making this change? Thanks, Jweiss11 (talk) 17:09, 2 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

okay, should be fixed. Frietjes (talk) 18:57, 2 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Looks good. Thanks! Jweiss11 (talk) 19:13, 2 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Tracking category for cleaning up captain and mvp fields

[edit]

I'd like to set up a tracking category to help clean up the formatting of the captain and mvp fields, as I did with this edit. Can we have a category that included in articles where there is a comma or a break tag in the captain or mvp fields? Frietjes, Dissident93, Primefac: can any of you help here? Thanks, Jweiss11 (talk) 18:29, 17 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Jweiss11, I added something to track in Category:Pages using infobox college sports team season with br or comma in captain and Category:Pages using infobox college sports team season with br or comma in mvp but it will take some time to fill up and to make sure I did it correctly. if there are a lot of false positives (e.g., commas in a link name or reference), we can refine the logic. Frietjes (talk) 19:26, 17 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for setting these up. Very helpful! Jweiss11 (talk) 22:47, 17 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

More MVP fields

[edit]

Frietjes, I've come across several examples of teams with three and four MVPs. Can we add fields for mvp3 and mvp4 to this template? I can take care of amending the documentation accordingly. Thanks again, Jweiss11 (talk) 20:38, 20 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Jweiss11, okay, I added mvp3 and mvp4. Frietjes (talk) 14:39, 21 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Description of suggested change: Recent changes to {{Infobox college basketball team}} and {{Infobox sports season}} have added the ability to display footnote explanations at or near the bottom of those infoboxes. The reasons for these changes have less to do with improving the infoboxes and more to do with overcoming an existing limitation and enhancing the overall quality of articles that contain infoboxes with footnotes. During a discussion about the change to the sports season infobox, MSGJ questioned whether footnotes within infoboxes were common. A search found that there were several existing infobox templates that did allow footnotes withing the infobox, but they were coded differently. The discussion and details are at Template talk:Infobox sports season#Header for footnotes. Since the change incorporates {{notelist}} within the infobox, the text size is reduced, creating an accessibility issue described at MOS:SMALLFONT. This has been addressed by increasing the font size of the output of notelist within the infobox. See the discussion at Template talk:Infobox#Notelist inside infobox.

Diff:

+
| header48 = {{#if:{{{notegroup|}}}|{{collapsed infobox section begin|{{#if:{{{onenote|}}}|Note|Notes}}|td=yes|titlestyle=background-color:#eeeeee}}}} | data49 = {{#if:{{{notegroup|}}}|<div style="text-align:left;font-size:108%">{{notelist|group={{{notegroup|}}}}}</div>{{collapsed infobox section end}}}}

The change has already been made in the sandbox, and test cases have been created.

Description of second suggested change: Most pages calling this template do not use the uniform parameters. However, the uniform graphics take different pathways to reach the infobox. The template presently puts Home and Away labels below the graphic. This works fine for association football teams. However, for basketball teams, it creates a redundancy unless the uniform has another name. See Le Moyne in the testcases. To address this, an option can be added to block the display of the title below the graphic.

Diff:

| data47 = {{#if:{{{uniform|}}} |{{#invoke:InfoboxImage|InfoboxImage|image={{{uniform|}}}|size=frameless|upright=1.25|title=center}} |{{#if:{{{uniform_home|}}}{{{uniform_away|}}} |<table style="background-color:white; color:#000; width:100%; margin:0; border-spacing:0;"><tr style="vertical-align:top"> {{#if:{{{uniform_home|}}} |<td style="width:50%">{{#invoke:InfoboxImage|InfoboxImage|image={{{uniform_home|}}}|size=frameless|upright=0.65|title=center}}<div>Home</div></td> }}{{#if:{{{uniform_away|}}} |<td style="width:50%">{{#invoke:InfoboxImage|InfoboxImage|image={{{uniform_away|}}}|size=frameless|upright=0.65|title=center}}<div>Away</div></td>}} </tr></table>}} }}
+
| data47 = {{#if:{{{uniform|}}} |{{#invoke:InfoboxImage|InfoboxImage|image={{{uniform|}}}|size=frameless|upright=1.25|title=center}} |{{#if:{{{uniform_home|}}}{{{uniform_away|}}} |<table style="background-color:white; color:#000; width:100%; margin:0; border-spacing:0;"><tr style="vertical-align:top"> {{#if:{{{uniform_home|}}} |<td style="width:50%">{{#invoke:InfoboxImage|InfoboxImage|image={{{uniform_home|}}}|size=frameless|upright=0.65|title=center}}{{#if:unititle||<div>Home</div></td>}} }}{{#if:{{{uniform_away|}}} |<td style="width:50%">{{#invoke:InfoboxImage|InfoboxImage|image={{{uniform_away|}}}|size=frameless|upright=0.65|title=center}}{{#if:unititle||<div>Away</div></td>}}}} </tr></table>}} }}

The change has already been made in the sandbox, and the effect can be seen in the Le Moyne infobox in the test cases. Activating the unititle parameter prevents the duplicated titles from being displayed. Taxman1913 (talk) 06:11, 15 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

 Done Note that the uniform parameter as you coded it was broken, never displaying the uniform labels. I think I fixed it, though. * Pppery * it has begun... 04:47, 2 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
