Harold Pope

@Abraham, B.S.: although he briefly held command of a brigade, Harold Pope was never promoted to general officer rank But he was promoted to the rank of brigadier general and reverted to his substantive rank of lieutenant colonel after being relieved of command of the 14th Infantry Brigade. According to p. 17 of his service record digitised on NAA [1], on 22 July 1916, "Rel. temp Rank of Col. on ceasing to command 14th Inf Bde Hdqrs". ADB also states he was a temporary colonel. Yes, confirming that I consulted Pope's ADB entry and scoured both his service record and the Commonwealth of Australia Gazette (via Trove) before making the edit – all evidence points to Pope having been promoted to temporary colonel, not brigadier general, while in command of the 14th Brigade. There is a document in Pope's service record recommending he be temporarily promoted to brigadier general, but the recommendation was evidently not approved before Pope was relieved of his brigade command.
