A non-self-governing territory with undetermined political status.[1] Formerly Spanish Sahara up to 1976, administration is currently de facto split between Morocco and the Polisario Front's Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR), both of which claim the entire territory. The SADR's administrative control is limited to approximately 30% of the territory, with the remaining 70% of the territory under Moroccan occupation.[2] The Polisario Front is recognized by the United Nations as the legitimate representative of the people of Western Sahara.[3][4] MINURSO is the United Nations peacekeeping mission to the territory (see Western Sahara conflict).
Western Sahara-note was created to serve as a marker of neutrality regarding the Western Sahara territorial dispute, with the main idea of preventing usage of politically-motivated entries like:
... Moroccan Sahara,
... Moroccan-occupied Sahara,
... SADR-occupied Sahara,
... Southern Provinces of Morocco, etc.
This note can be used after the plain word Western Sahara in the main text.
