Notes on the family tree

[edit]
  • The precise relationship between Harald Wartooth and Sigurd Hring is lost in a lacuna due to missing pages in the surviving manuscript. However, following the gap, someone visits King Harald, "his father's brother", and is greeted warmly. This is almost certainly Hring, who in the following sentence is described as Harald's "kinsman" and is made the general of Harald's armies. Given that Hroerek and Aud had only one son before Hroerek's death, the most likely connection is that Hring's father was the son of Aud with her second husband, Radbard, as shown here. In other sources, including Arngrímur Jónsson's Rerum Danicarum fragmenta, this is Randver.
  • Alfhild, the wife of Hring, is described in her first mention as the daughter of King Alf. Later, once Sigurd Hring has succeeded Harald Wartooth, his in-laws (i.e. Alfhild's family) are called the sons of Gandalf instead, and all are descended from Alf the Old. Both names of Alfhild's father have been included here.
