Mary Ackland Provost (Browne)

i bought a box at a flea market several years ago in upstate NY the box contained a envelope with writing on it , the writing said black lace cap belonged to Mary Ackland Provost (browne) granddaughter of David Provost Mayor of NY 1699-1700. Also was a set of Military brass buttons from American Emblem in Utica ,NY. I'm trying to see if any Provost served in WWII because that is the era of the buttons.
