Ecuador’s Visa Policy Changes for Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, and Chinese Passports

[edit]

In July 2024, Ecuador suspended its visa-free policy for holders of Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, and Chinese passports as part of a broader decision to cancel visa-free access for Chinese nationals. Following this change, some online platforms reported instances of travelers being deported from Ecuador for lacking a visa[1][2].
Conflicting updates have since emerged. Timatic reports that visa-free access has been reinstated for Hong Kong passport holders[3]. Sherpa indicates that visa-free entry has been restored for Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan passport holders[4]. The Chinese Embassy in Ecuador states that visa-free access for Hong Kong and Macau Special Administrative Region (SAR) passports has been reinstated. However, the Ecuadorian Embassy in China recommends obtaining a visa.
The official website of the Ecuadorian government does not reflect these changes, leaving the current visa policy status unclear[5].

And I believe the visa-free policy has not been canceled but is temporarily suspended. The visa-free agreement between China and Ecuador remains in effect. China continues to maintain its visa-free policy for Ecuador. @Cyfraw Juniper 0720 (talk) 11:15, 2 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the information, but when I want to the visa policy on the Ecuadorian government website, it says that citizens of China need a visa, but it didn't mention Hong Kong, Macau or Taiwan. --cyrfaw (talk) 11:36, 2 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Taiwan’s Bureau of Consular Affairs and Hong Kong’s Immigration Department have removed Ecuador from the visa-free list for Hong Kong and Taiwan passport holders [6][7]. Macau’s Identification Services Bureau (DSI) has not yet updated its list to reflect this change [8], though their updates are often delayed. For instance, DSI was unaware that Indonesia had canceled its visa-on-arrival policy for Macau passport holders, resulting in four Macau tourists being deported from Indonesia in November 2024 😅.
I believe the Ecuadorian government may view Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan passports as equivalent to Chinese passports, leading to the simultaneous suspension of their visa-free entry policies. A similar situation exists with Sri Lanka’s free ETA policy, which officially applies to Chinese passport holders but, in practice, includes Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan passport holders.
