Date of Birth
[edit]The official Olympics website gives MacDonald's year of birth as 1904. Another site (https://web.archive.org/web/20200418095429/https://www.sports-reference.com/olympics/athletes/ma/rena-macdonald-1.html) gives 3rd April 1907 and birth place as Reserve Mines, Nova Scotia.
A niece of MacDonald's states that she was born in 1st September 1904 in West Lakevale, Antigonish, Nova Scotia. She gives the source as St. Columba Church Baptism records (and notes that the family name sometimes appears as McDonald in records). I have not changed the entry as I am unable to verify this.
Newspaper obituaries from November 1958 give her age as 51, consistent with a 1907 birth date.
Is anyone able to verify her date of birth? MinetteMimi (talk) 11:51, 25 September 2024 (UTC)

[edit]McDonald, Margaret Catherinebirthdate 1904, Sept 1, West Lakevale, Baptism Sept 4. Parents Alexander McDonald, Mary MacIntyre. This is definitely the family, in Lakevale census 1901 and 1911. Four siblings also born in Lakevale/West Lakevale to Alexander McDonald and Mary McIntyre,my maternal grandparents. Not sure why the “Mc” spelling was used instead of “Mac” which is the correct spelling. Don’t know how “Reserve Mines” was on her death record, but it looks like the cemetery added photos, and maybe the town from other, inaccurate records out there. Rena MacDonald Birthdate and location
[edit]Not sure how to upload her baptism record from St. Columba’s in West Lakevale, Antigonish, Nova Scotia. Five children born to Alexander Angus MacDonskd ( spelled McDonald on those records) and Mary MacIntyre. All born at same location, baptized at same church. My mother Anna, was the youngest child, born in Dedham, MA, where you will find Rena, sometimes called “Margaret” sometimes “Catherine” on the 1920, 1930, and 1940 US census. The home in Dedham is where the family lived since 1913, and where I grew up. My Father on the 1940 census is Thomas Hanlon, Mother, Anna, Rena, sister-in-law. Brother John A MacDonald also living there in 1940. If I knew how to upload these records from my Ancestry Family tree, I would. Trying to set the record straight in anticipation of the upcoming 200 year anniversary of the 1928 Olympics in Los Angeles, where I now live. Nhlyons (talk) 06:25, 25 May 2025 (UTC)
