Born to the stage, he was less than a year old when he gave his first performance. His mother Rose Stillman was heading her own Uncle Tom's Cabin troupe when he was born at St. St. Paul, Minnesota. Six to eleven months later–he was uncertain as to the exact time–he made his debut in the play as Eliza's baby.
