Major restructuring needed to the PIRG and Fund wikis

Hello, I will start by saying that while I have a history of doing small edits or adds to wikipedia pages, this is my first project doing a massive overhaul of a page and writing new ones.

Essentially, as someone who has been an intern with CALPIRG, employee of the Fund, and employee of the Student PIRGs, I am absolutely sure that the wikipedia page as it exists now does not accurately reflect the structure or relationships between the different groups within the Public Interest Network. I see that previously, someone had clarified it to be a lot better than it was before, but I think the important distinction is the PIRG page is slightly convoluted with The Public Interest Network (TPIN) which is not exactly the same as "the PIRGs"

U.S. PIRG and the state PIRGs are separate nonprofits -- i.e. U.S. PIRG is not the "boss" or overarching entity of the state PIRGs as is implied by the current article. Additionally, U.S. PIRG is not the same as TPIN, and the Fund is further separated from those other two entities.

It will take a bit to assemble all of the elements to start restructuring this way, but I hope to slowly separate them into separate wikis. Ideally, the TPIN article would be the only one which shows a direct relation to all of the others. Elvishrose (talk) 17:38, 23 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

To Elvishrose's point, may I suggest the following small changes to the intro paragraph:

"Public Interest Research Groups (PIRGs) are U.S. and Canadian[4] non-profit organizations that employ grassroots organizing and direct advocacy on issues such as consumer protection, public health and transportation. Many of the PIRGs are closely affiliated with the Fund for the Public Interest...."

That is, many, but not nearly all, PIRGs are "federated". (Let me know if you need a list of those that are not significantly affiliated with each other.) So, it's more accurate to knock out the phrase "a federation of" and to add "Many of" to the reference to the Fund for the Public Interest. Wynott (talk) 17:51, 22 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
