It's a soundtrack album like Quake. But, unlike the original release of Quake, it is being given a worldwide retail release. Every song is credited to NIN, and even the newest single sounds like a proper NIN song.
After it's released, here on the main page, does it get added under Studio Albums? Or does it get its own sub-section, under the current listing (which then Quake would get added alongside it I assume)? Or does it not get included at all?
FYI, Daft Punk did the previous Tron: Legacy soundtrack. For awhile, it was listed under their Studio Albums on their main page. But then it was taken down. I glanced at the archives, and there wasn't any discussion about it though. Xanarki (talk) 18:22, 17 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I think both the Quake and Tron soundtracks should be added to the discography section with mouse-over references like the EPs that indicate them as soundtrack albums. StuOnThis (talk) 18:40, 17 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I'm a bit conflicted. Having 'em lumped with the others (but with the mouse-overs) does make sense. But, it makes more sense for Tron than Quake. However, both arguably needs to be added.
Having a separate column would work too. 'Studio Albums' in bold and then 'Soundtrack Albums' in bold. I know it's formatted this way for another band but the name escapes me atm.
Guess I don't have a preference either way. But, it might become clearer how Trent views it soon via marketing material and interviews. I just now saw the NIN email and it specifically says word for word "the new Nine Inch Nails album". Xanarki (talk) 20:44, 17 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
This doesn't sound any different to me than when we were debating adding the EPs a few years ago. I can certainly understand not adding Natural Born Killers or Lost Highway or the slew of Trent & Atticus soundtracks, but both Quake and Tron: Legacy are still indeed straight up NIN albums and are branded and marketed as such. Adding another whole column only bloats the article even worse, which is the reason we're debating adding them in the first place, right? I have half a mind to just go ahead and impose my idea just to see if Bowling For Life deletes it. StuOnThis (talk) 17:03, 18 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I think we should wait until it's actually released (and if anyone else bothers to reply here). There will be more clarity at that point. And to see how NIN approaches its release too. If Trent wants this to be equal to the other studio releases, then it'll become apparent, I'm sure.
Just like the EPs though, this is definitely a per basis scenario. I've included examples below of soundtracks that were created by/credited to one artist (fully or mostly)...
Artists that have soundtrack albums lumped alongside their other major releases: Pink Floyd (More & Obscured by Clouds), The Beatles (Magical Mystery Tour & Yellow Submarine), David Bowie (The Buddha of Suburbia), Prince (Purple Rain & Parade & Batman & Graffiti Bridge), Journey (Dream, After Dream), Black Francis (The Golem)
Artists that have a separate column for soundtracks but are still listed on the main page (all of which have separate Discography pages too): Peter Gabriel, Toto, Mark Knopfler, Vangelis
