Confidence and supply agreement

I feel like there needs to be more article emphasis on this. He's arguably the most powerful federal NDP leader ever, because of his party's confidence and supply agreement with the governing Liberals. This agreement also arguably makes him one of the most powerful men in Canada, and more powerful than the official opposition leader. Jozsefs (talk) 09:39, 15 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

WP:OR, and also just plainly no. The NDP under Tommy Douglas worked with the minority Pearson Liberals to implement Medicare nationwide over a PC Opposition and Liberal infighting, and Douglas was later voted the Greatest Canadian specifically for that (Pearson was 6th). The David Lewis NDP bargained with P.E. Trudeau to create Petro-Canada during the 70s oil crisis. The NDP under Bob Rae defeated the Joe Clark Tories' minority when they tried to add a wildly unpopular gas tax to their budget, still in the midst of the same oil crisis. Jack Layton helped take down minority governments twice: first Paul Martin's Liberals and then Stephen Harper's Conservatives. What has Singh accomplished? The confidence-and-supply agreement really just gives the Liberals carte blanche to govern as though they hold a majority, after agreeing to create a national dental care program and then doing it in the most half-baked way they possibly could have, and Singh isn't really trying to get anything else out of that agreement. The federal NDP held the balance in the Pearson minority government, Martin minority government and was the official opposition with the Conservative Party of Canada majority. Whether you call it a supply and confidence agreement, an unofficial accord etc. they have influenced government policy in several parliaments. Edit request on 28 March 2025

Under the heading "Sikh matters and relations with India" there is a line

Singh "spent much of his early political career as an MP in Ontario lobbying...

Singh was not an MP at this time, he was an MPP - request is to change "as an MP in Ontario" to "as an MPP in Ontario"

I believe you are right but the cited source says "MP" and not "MPP". It wouldn't surprise me if the news reporter made a mistake though. I will add a " [sic]" and an explanatory note regarding this. Thanks for pointing this out. The Sophocrat (talk) 00:07, 2 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

He has stepped down as the head of the NPD party as of April 29th, 2025 midnight EST. Let this be the first request on Wikipedia for the removal of his name.
