Dubious claim regarding sex differences in US life expectancy

[edit]

The statement “Men in the United States tend to live longer than women.” cites Read, J. G., & Gorman, B. K. (2010). Gender and Health Inequality. Annual Review of Sociology, 36(1), 371–386.doi:10.1146/annurev.soc.012809.102535, but the cited article does not support this claim. In fact, it plainly states the opposite:

pg 373:

The most recent data for the United States show that life expectancy at birth for women is 80.4 years, compared with 75.2 years for men meaning that, on average, women live 5.2 years longer than men (Natl. Cent. Health Stat. 2009).

pg 375:

Women make up more than half of the U.S. population and comprise 58% of seniors aged 65 and older

At no point in this publication does it support the claim that men in the United States live longer than women in the United States.

Editing to say, I now realize it may have been more appropriate to use Failed Verification instead of Dubious.

Probably a typo. I fixed it. Jaredroach (talk) 15:24, 27 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
