Russophobia

[edit]

Hi My very best wishes, I think some of the info you deleted is relevant [1]. I find it notable that one of the most prominent politicians in Romania described himself plainly as Russophobic. I do agree though that explaining the context might be undue and irrelevant. The information could be easily integrated into a paragraph explaining his political views if we had one, but it is not currently present in the article. Still I think the information could be restored by cutting off the unnecessary details. Simion called himself "the most Russophobic party president" and stated that "I acquired this Russophobia over time" could be enough. Perhaps I could briefly include at the Controversies section claims of AUR's pro-Russian affiliations and include this statement. And anyway, Category:Anti-Russian sentiment is still present in the article but currently without justification. What do you think? Super Dromaeosaurus (talk) 11:16, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

In this diff a politician denies an accusation that he was connected to Russian FSB. There are several articles linked about it [2],[3], etc. His response (as framed in the text on the page) is extremely unconvincing, something like "Hell no, I am a Russophobe, and all our party members are Russophobes!" I am not against including this, but it is not about him being a Russophobe, quite the opposite. My very best wishes (talk) 20:37, 13 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The claim comes from Anatol Șalaru, former Minister of Defense of the Republic of Moldova, and he provides a lot of details about the subject allegedly working for the FSB. I am not sure if this needs to be included on the page, but if we do, I hope he made a better rebuttal that simply calling himself a "Russophobe", and we should include this better rebuttal. My very best wishes (talk) 21:01, 13 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I can see your point. Thanks for your explanation. I'll leave the issue. Super Dromaeosaurus (talk) 18:17, 18 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Ethnicity

[edit]

Is he part of Romania's roma gypsy ethnic minority or a Romanian? 2A04:4A43:431F:CA91:0:0:B51A:DCA0 (talk) 23:48, 4 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

His grandfather is of gypsy ethnic minority. He said that at least twice: https://www.gandul.ro/actualitate/george-simion-a-explicat-de-ce-l-a-facut-tigan-pe-marcel-ciolacu-cum-argumenteaza-liderul-aur-ca-nu-uraste-pe-criterii-de-etnie-20291055 and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I2fe_nXCeBM (interview in Romanian). Remove "far-right" in first sentence. Add above lead hidden text: "Please do not add far-right without consensus on the talk page. European Union section uses bad English 81.92.27.224 (talk) 12:56, 19 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Not done: No reason given for the proposed removal - the characterization of Simion as far-right is adequately sourced. Day Creature (talk) 16:13, 19 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Simion has quite clearly aligned himself with figures like Meloni, Morawiecki, Nawrocki, Maréchal, etc., none of whom are referred to as far-right in the lead of their Wikipedia articles. "Far-right" is a highly loaded term that connotes neo-Nazism, racial supremacism, and similar ideologies. Exceptional claims require exceptional sources, especially in a BLP article. There are several sources from English-speaking media also calling Javier Milei "far-right" (which is arguably an anglicism), but his lead still doesn't mention his political leanings until the last paragraph. There was also a discussion at Talk:Javier Milei/Archive 4 - Wikipedia about this (a different case, of course). To borrow from SMcCandlish's argument in that discussion, labeling Simion "far-right" in the lead would misleadingly over-generalize, relying on selective and overly simplistic sources. It would be a thought-terminating cliché, and to the extent that it steers the average reader into associating Simion with much more extreme figures—e.g., Hitler (who is not even called "far-right" in his lead)—it would amount to WP:OR and a WP:POV issue by endorsing the most extreme labeling advanced by his political opponents. 81.92.27.231 (talk) 13:43, 21 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
