[edit]This page needs some major re-doing. Looks like it's up to me! *theme music*
Would this be a good time to note the decidedly uncouth and loosely-worded vocabulary of most of this article? It appears to strongly contrast with the refined textbook speech of the majority of Wikipedia. If others do not take action soon, then I am afraid I shall have to do so myself. I just hope I can translate this American rubbish properly. --User: Hardcoach
- You were right to smell a rat there... it appears that most of that text was copied directly from TVTropes, where that writing style is more in character. Have reverted to the last good version now (from a month ago - ouch). Slovakia (talk) 14:11, 2 July 2012 (UTC)
- I agree it needs a total makeover; can help out with English and reference cleaning after the re-write. AngusWOOF (talk) 17:07, 2 July 2012 (UTC)
Merger proposal

- The result of this discussion was to merge AngusWOOF (talk) 02:22, 22 February 2014 (UTC)
I propose that Kaitō (thief) be merged into this article, as the Kaito (thief) one was created in August 2013 out of the section for phantom thieves in Eastern media without much need for distinction between the Eastern and Western version. As both articles are stub-class, this is heavily redundant. -AngusWOOF (talk) 14:20, 24 October 2013 (UTC)
- I agree with the merge. Gabriel Yuji (talk) 20:33, 12 February 2014 (UTC)
Why Robin Hood from Once Upon a Time...

List of characters
[edit]There are a few characters on the list that I'm not so sure count as gentlemen thieves. For example, Gru, Jack Sparrow, and the characters from Grand Theft Auto V. But maybe I am wrong. Ideally we would have some kind of reliable sources for this information. Pythagimedes (talk) 03:29, 13 February 2023 (UTC)
I agree. This article has grown without good editorial control, and now lists a number of trivial and minor characters without citations or evidence that they are 'Gentleman thieves' or are of any importance. Can someone review it and drastically edit it back to the original definition?Masato.harada (talk) 08:50, 13 February 2023 (UTC)
- This article has got even worse in the last year: it has turned into a list of trivia without sourcing. Has anyone got the time to hack it back? Masato.harada (talk) 11:18, 1 January 2025 (UTC)
Drastic review of this article required
[edit]This page was identified in 2012 as requiring a rewrite and the addition of references. In 2018, it was marked as containing irrelevant references to popular culture, and needing additional citations for verification. Since then, it has wandered far away from the description given in the lead, and has become a collection of trivia and miscellaneous information without reliable sources, based on personal opinion. See WP:RELIABLE, WP:NOTEVERYTHING, WP:INDISCRIMINATE, MOS:POPCULT. Most examples shown are not gentleman thieves but master thieves, master criminals, supervillains, or likeable or courteous criminals, eg Rick Blaine, Thomas Crown, René Belloq, Walter Donovan, Gru, etc etc.
The page needs a complete reboot to get it back to encyclopedic quality. I propose that every example should be deleted which does not have a reliable source describing it as a gentleman thief or phantom thief or as comparable with one, or whose own WP page does not do so.
This would have a drastic effect as follows:
- 'In fiction' section: only remaining examples would be A. J. Raffles, Arsène Lupin, Filibus, Jimmy Bourne, Sir Charles Litton, Sir Oliver, Lupin III, Jack from Mysterious Joker.
- 'Perceptions of real historical figures' section: only remaining example would be Bạch Hải Đường.
Editors would then be welcome to restore examples on condition they are reliably sourced.
The only alternative I see is to change the subject of the page, and retitle it as 'Master Criminal' or something similar, and expand it to include Dr. Mabuse, Professor Moriarty, et al.
Comments? Masato.harada (talk) 15:16, 10 March 2025 (UTC)
- I get that it was a strawman proposal, but the scope of the article absolutely shouldn't be expanded to any old "Master Criminal", but restricted to those of the Raffles / Lupin mode. I'm not certain that slashing it down would require something as drastic as what you describe, though - characters like The Saint (Simon Templar) should be pretty easy to reference, say.
