According to Google Ngrams flowering plants is around 50 times more frequent than fruit-bearing plants. Fruiting plants (meaning plants currently in fruit) is several times more common than fruit-bearing plants. When it comes to use of the terms for types of plants I'd guess there's a greater rate of false positives for fruit-bearing plants than for flowering plants. But I couldn't estimate how the relative effect of other meaning for flowering plants (plants currently in flower) on the false positive rate. Lavateraguy (talk) 17:13, 18 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Diversity section - method of obtaining energy

[edit]

The paragraph that starts "Considering their method of obtaining energy" states that most derive their energy from sunlight and "the remainder are parasitic", an objectively untrue statement given the existence of carnivorous plants, such as the sundew featured just below as an example of a plant living in an acidic environment. Paragraph needs rewording imo, perhaps simply to say that "the remainder are parasitic or carnivorous" or something better. Gergpig (talk) 18:58, 19 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Many thanks. However, no carnivorous plant derives all (or even most ... or even detectable amounts) of its energy from meat; it's a way of obtaining nutrients such as Nitrogen compounds. We also say "Hard cases make bad law": it isn't advisable to tell a simple story and then lace it with minor qualifications and rare exceptions, it's confusing for readers rather than helpful. The text is fine as it is. Chiswick Chap (talk) 20:08, 19 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
