Currently the issue is heating up ready to fire across Australia. Three citations from today that might be useful after something actually happens in some parliament of Australia. Donama (talk) 06:19, 20 September 2010 (UTC)

1. Both SA and WA parliaments are about to dabble with euthanasia legislation. A Green MP and Labor MP legislating in SA and a Green MP legislating in WA.
2. The NT has legalised it previously, though the right for territories to legislate so is now gone.
3. Now the federal Greens are trying to restore that right.
4. Tony Abbott said today the whole issue is "low priority."

Wording

I feel that the wording should be changed in " current situation". It says that three people died by assisted suicide. However, Dr Phil performed euthanasia.

Are you referring to this sentence in Euthanasia in Australia#Legalisation in the Northern Territory?

... three people had already died through physician assisted suicide under the legislation, aided by Dr Philip Nitschke.

It seems reasonable to mee - I don't think there is any doubt that the three people explicitly chose to die (ie "suicide") and were helped to do so by Nitschke (hence "assisted suicide").

Formatting change to Wikimarkup suggestion

Reduce Victoria section to summary in lieu of main page

Illegal on a federal level?

Table?

I made this table in order to make it easier to see what state have what laws. Similar to Phase-out of lightweight plastic bags in Australia and others I have seen. But not sure if it should be added. So I've put here to see what others think.

Yourlastright.com - dead link

The article states that "The euthanasia advocacy group YourLastRight.com[78] is the peak organisation...", yet the link is completely dead. Could this be removed if the organisation is now defunct?

Also, there is a entire article on Yourlastright.com that doesn't mention anything about the website being dead. I couldn't find an option to report the article, so maybe someone could look into getting it removed if it is indeed defunct. Savlonn (talk) 19:56, 16 April 2022 (UTC)

Article title

Looking at the history, this was initially Euthanasia in Australia. Then in July 2024 it was moved - without any discussion, as far as I can tell - to Assisted dying in Australia. The argument was that this article covers both Euthanasia and assisted suicide so it should be under a common term. In December 2024 it was moved once again, this time to Assisted suicide in Australia.

The problem is that assisted suicide and euthanasia are not the same thing. They are in the same area of medical ethics, but they are generally considered distinct, as it is common for assisted suicide to be legal when euthanasia is not, and euthanasia covers a range of practices only some of which may be legal (voluntary may be legal when involuntary is not, passive may be acceptable when active is not, etc). So I don't fell that - as it stands - this should be under either "assisted suicide" or "euthanasia". I'm open to an argument about assisted dying, but that generally only refers to a subset anyway, so for now I have moved it to the combined "Euthanasia and assisted suicide" title in the hope of finding some middle grounds.
