Should we add a seat distribution diagram?

[edit]

While not a directly elected body or a body with largely any legislative power, the European Council is regarded as the highest power in the Union. It's nature means that no official council groups mirroring that of the European parliament have formed. Despite of this the body still consists politicians directly affiliated with political parties of the European Parliament and that are likely to represent the values of these groups.

My proposal aims to create a political seat distribution diagram in line with that of legislative bodies to replace the current pillar model used.

The Council has ,despite being a non legislative collegiate body, a great deal of power. It is tasked with the nominations of members of the European Commission,the appointment of the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, and the appointment of the president of the European Central Bank. It also can override legislative decisions of the Council of Ministers granting it limited legislative power. It has largely become the body responsible for deciding on EU foreign and security policy.

Currently the political group task this diagram is meant to perform is being carried out by a different from of diagram. While functional in establishing the balance of power between these groups, it in my view is not the correct or most effective way. It is not correct, because it is not in line with how political power distribution in a body is usually represented. It is also ineffective because it is unable to present the information in a left wing-right wing format, which I see as crucial to quickly understanding what sort of policy is to be expected.

Due to these reasons I believe there is cause to create a seat distribution map for the body to replace what currently exists. It would allow readers to ,in an even quicker and easier way than currently, receive an overview of the balance of power in the body between the political groups of it. I have created such a chart in case consensus supportive of adding such was ever to be reached;

The distribution of seats between political groups in the European Council as of the nineteenth of July 2025.

It is to be noted that independent(gray) and unaffiliated(dark gray) members are placed in the right wing of the chart, due to the limitations of the tool used.
