I'm pretty sure the following aspects should be added to the article:
epistemological duties,
Locke's and Descarte's contribution to developing a deontology of belief,
doxastic voluntarism (regarding the question in the article, wether or not someone can chose to believe something:
"One might also ask whether people really make these meta-level decisions voluntarily.")
The already cited article of the Standford Encyclopedia probably offers these and a lot more points. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 141.70.15.10 (talk) 03:03, 9 September 2014 (UTC)
Maybe merge with Epistemic Responsibility?
[edit]This article is about the general term "Ethics of Responsibility," which is closely related to Epistemic Responsibility. I believe epistemic responsibility is a more well-known and researched subject than the Ethics of Belief.
Currently, the article about Epistemic Responsibility is very short and partial. By merging the content from this article into that article, we can have a unified article with all the knowledge needed.
My suggestion is:
- Merge the content from this article into the article about Epistemic Responsibility.
- Rewrite this article to be specific about Clifford's article "The Ethics of Responsibility" from 1877.
Would love to hear other people's opinions about this suggestion. Saroad (talk) 19:26, 25 May 2025 (UTC)
- I think it makes sense to have an article on the general topic of the ethics of belief (rather than just the essay) and many other sources do the same under the name "ethics of belief" (some examples: 1, 2, 3, 4). A new article on the 1877 essay by Clifford could be created at The Ethics of Belief or The Ethics of Belief (essay) as an alternative to re-writing this article. - there's an SEP article with the title "Ethics of Belief" linked at the bottom of the article. this is plainly an encyclopedic topic, and it's distinct from epistemic responsibility Psychastes (talk) 03:26, 4 June 2025 (UTC)
