[edit]The main building burned 1892? It closed after the Days Law segregated schools in the state (barring Berea from continuing to admit African American students). As a result, efforts were made to establish a college for blacks. Protests and threats to keep the proposed school out of various areas were made. FloridaArmy (talk) 01:45, 17 July 2025 (UTC)
- Hey FloridaArmy, I added citations for the 1892 fire. However I can't find any sources about the school closing in 1909 or 1910, or anything related to the Day Law. In Newspapers.com, it appears the school stayed open in 1909 and 1910 based on the ongoing news. Do you have any sources we could add? PigeonChickenFish (talk) 04:37, 17 July 2025 (UTC)
- The merger was announced in 1909 as noted in newspapers here. The new institution was being organized by Berea because it could no longer educate African Americans after the Day Law instituted mandated segregationist .. sources to follow.. one interesting side note, [[T. U. Underwood is noted as having supported the establishment of the school (article bottom right).. The change in law and Berra College funding for new college noted here.
Several sources discuss it being a vocational school and students having to work. Also, no government funding for it noted here. FloridaArmy (talk) 10:50, 17 July 2025 (UTC)
Industrial education model, lack of state support, and segregation law (Day Law) targeting Berea (private institution covered here as well as opposition to new college being established in Shelby County (page 120 / 113 actual). FloridaArmy (talk) 11:00, 17 July 2025 (UTC)
