Mother (video game series) → EarthBound (series) – With the release of EarthBound Beginnings a decade ago, it is obvious that Nintendo does not wish to retire the EarthBound brand and rename the series Mother. That makes two video games entitled "EarthBound" in English, and it is highly likely that Mother 3 would just be EarthBound 2 if it ever saw a localized Switch 2 Online release or something. For this reason, the article should use the English common name of the series per WP:USEENGLISH.   • Oppose. This is recentism. The majority of sources (per our article) commonly call it the Mother series. The speculation on Nintendo's potential future actions is not helpful—even if they did change the official name, we use the common name per reliable sources. Separately, since it was brought up, I'd also judge the consensus at the above EarthBound Beginnings move as weak and dependent on extra weight given handful of recent reviews rather than the entire history of how a Japanese game with an English-language title was better known and covered for decades. czar 12:53, 13 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
    See WP:NAMECHANGES which was a similar rationale to moving Seiken Densetsu III. A common name can in fact change, and while it was indeed "Mother series" in between EarthBound being released and EarthBound Beginnings being released, a more recent name change is still grounds for a move if there's clear evidence the new name has stuck. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ (ᴛ) 22:15, 13 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
    What I'm saying is that there isn't enough evidence that the recent usage has supplanted the more common, historical usage. "Mother" is and has been the English-language name. czar 03:09, 17 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

    Mother may still be used frequently, but EarthBound is also used with similar frequency if not more. EarthBound is the English name of the series. WP:USEENGLISH dictates we use the one that corresponds to the language of the encyclopedia rather than keeping it locked on the preferred name of series fans only. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ (ᴛ) 08:40, 14 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
