Puerto Rico
[edit]Why does it say United States and Puerto Rico as if Puerto Rico isn't apart of the United States? Other territories like Washington D.C have Costcos but I don't see 'United States, Puerto Rico and Washington D.C'. If I don't get a sufficient answer I'm going to delete all mentions that seem to separate Puerto Rico from the United States soon. Cruetresin (talk) 02:11, 19 November 2024 (UTC)
- Washington, D.C. isn't a territory. It's a federal district and, obviously, the country's capital. It also has electoral votes. So Washington, D.C. doesn't really equate to Puerto Rico, which is a self-governing territory. In the lead and under the "Locations" section, the article mentions 614 locations in the United States, and it explicitly includes Puerto Rico in that number. So it isn't like the article is trying to imply that Puerto Rico is a completely separate country. But since it is a territory, not a state, it's worth noting stores in Puerto Rico. I don't know that it would be helpful to remove Puerto Rico from the article. pillowcrow 18:28, 19 November 2024 (UTC)
- It's not helpful to have Puerto Rico either, what does it tell the reader? Also I don't mean to say that D.C and Puerto Rico are the same it's the fact that Puerto Rico and D.C are special territories that don't need to be listed as separate from the US. Cruetresin (talk) 09:57, 20 November 2024 (UTC)
- If it's not helpful either way, then it might as well remain the same. But it tells the reader that there are stores in Puerto Rico. That's helpful because when people hear or read "United States," they're not typically thinking of Puerto Rico—just as they're not typically thinking of Guam, American Samoa, or the US Virgin Islands. Again, D.C. is not a "special territory." It's a federal district that holds electoral votes. pillowcrow 20:33, 20 November 2024 (UTC)
- @Cruetresin The United States is defined as the 50 states and the federal district (D.C.). It does not include Puerto Rico or any of the other U.S. territories. So yes, Puerto Rico needs to be listed separately from the U.S., but D.C. does not. Ghost writer's cat (talk) 03:39, 5 May 2025 (UTC)

Membership fees vs retail sales
[edit]I've reinstated the citation request on the first sentence under Business Model regarding fees versus sales revenue. Although taken from an unreliable source (which, BTW, was archived, so is still accessible despite Coolcaesar's claim that it's not), that source contradicted his own article. I tried to find a better source, but I'm finding the results confusing. They come back with membership fees being only a very small portion of net revenue, but this one gets into the "membership margin" and claims it's 66% of the "bottom line", which might be the source of the confusion. (As I understand it, net revenue IS the bottom line, so I don't know how they calculated the 66%. Using their numbers, membership was 65% of "net income".) Meanwhile, USA Today gives some different numbers even though these two articles were written less than a week apart. It's all in the terminology and what numbers they're using. Maybe someone with better business acumen could look into this and come up with something definitive? Ghost writer's cat (talk) 04:16, 5 May 2025 (UTC)
